Using MDW—especially during bad weather—is the key to an ORD commute. I can’t tell you how many afternoons when there were 10-15 jumpseaters trying to get on 5 oversold delayed overweight RJ’s...I’d hop on the train to MDW, get on southwest and be in my own bed while they fought it out for nonexistent rides and ended up the morning of their day off at the Quality Inn.

There out to be a universal rule at every major airline: NO ability to write a LOR in your probationary first year. That would drastically reduce the amount of BS letters of rec that are written after one’s new found popularity.
 
Well,technically they‘re weighted at some shops. The average new hire cranks those LORs out like an A-10’s Gatling gun so it’s expected that they have a lot of “new” friends.

Yup. May as well save the headache. Why should probies get a voice in hiring, when they themselves are basically on a “watch this guy” portion of their career for first year?

I can't remember, it was almost 6 years ago now, but I think that actually used to be a thing at Eff Niner. Couldn't hand out silver bullets until your second year. The joke was on them. At that time, hardly anyone wanted to work there.

What’s ballpark for take home pay on first year? It would be a sizable pay cut for me but year 2 would get me just over where I am now. Trying to see if I could swing it

Most clear around 60-65k, BUT with very little open time, it doesn’t leave much to earn extra.

Before COVID, there was typically 10-50 open time trips in most bases (Chicago was the exception).

line holders could swap/drop/trade to a peach schedule. I rarely flew what I was awarded.

Now unless you WANT a red eye, there’s very little in the pot...all because of COVID, but for all intents and purposes it’s a small thing to complain about.
 
Why do you suppose Chicago was the exception? People eat up OT or the trips just never popped up?

It’s the smallest base with the least amount of lines, so it just has limited amount of open time. Denver and Vegas will have 30+ open trips and Chicago would have 3-4....just how it is
