From Stalking Thread - Sensitive Communication Topic

Well, there’s a number of issues. VHF is basically a megaphone. So you’re alerting everyone within line-of-site of the signal, including people who may be involved that there’s going to be a situation upon arriving at the next airport.

Evidence can be destroyed, they can contact the person via WiFi in flight. Stories can be coordinated and you probably just blew an investigation — much like if you have a suspected child trafficking case onboard, the last thing you may want to do is say this over VHF OR kick the passenger off the aircraft.

Plus, on a “ooh, this might get litigious” if the information the crew was given wasn’t factual, you’ve just implicated two companies a potentially (potentially) innocent person and there’s evidentiary material making the rounds on the open internet.

Keep it discrete in ACARS, keep it factual, have flight control contact the SCC and let them handle the situation.

Now there’s going to be a carnival around HQ wondering who the potential stalker and the stalkee around and you’ve just increased the heat in the situation if the authorities aren’t able to bring charges or detain the person.

It makes for an interesting audio clip and a teachable moment.

At my shop, contacting dispatch via VHF isn’t terribly common except for serious emergencies. In a situation like this communication would probably be via ACARS which we all know is available publicly as well. Putting myself in the captains shoes from that situation I would probably just give the basics and requests through ACARS. Is there a better way to do this?

ACARS with factual information: “Pax 25C/Lastname suspects being stalked by Pax 26B/Lastname. Pax separated. Cabin crew observing. Two passengers apparently have personal history. Please contact corpsec”.

Done.

Zero editorial comment. Factual. Actionable because that’s all you really know.

VHF is never your friend in these situations, especially in a litigious environment.

Yikes. Not sure the storybook telling was needed over the radio. This could have been a simple 60 second max convo, we will see LE when we land in Atlanta.

And ATL radio? Y’all don’t have SATCOM for this?
What it sounded like to me was a conversation a captain would have with Medlink about a medical situation. Like through our training it’s an easy button for solving passenger issues.

Excellent.

Can Delta not call dispatch via wifi phone? Seems two of these long diatribes have made it to the internetz recently.

I was not aware ACARS is public...

Le how?

I guess Sat phone call to Dispatch?

vhf transmissions are scraped and decoded, it's not encrypted at all

But that wouldn't really apply to what @derg is saying. You'd have to have someone with ALOT of free time decoding ACARS messages and reading through them. I'm thinking this can only be done on the ground? Then txting their buddy in the cabin and be like "yo bro delete your upskirt pics on your phone".
