Forum Suggestions

I understand everyones frustrations....having sub forums, locking sticky's, limititing newbie's access to start a new thread...When you prohibit a memeber from posting a comment it impedes on one's creative thinking. This forum will have no "personality", it will be like being in the military(no offense to anyone in the armed forces) What makes anyone think that newbies will read available information before they start a new thread or post?

...I think they all mean posting new threads not commenting on them

I think a few subforums would be good...I mean to keep it simple it could be three categories:

  1. Application Process (Announcements, AT-SAT, Geographic Prefs)
  2. Education & Training (OKC, CTI, Developmental)
  3. Career

I second the idea- lock newbie status from posting new threads, and I'd say up it so that newbies get switched to "Junior Status" after 60 posts, possibly 50 (I forget what it is now, but it should be upped)

Um... what happened to that post I quoted?!?!?

This anti-newbie stuff is very silly. Making up more rules is kinda ridiculous, and for what? because you're sick of redundant questions? C'mon.... I can see if there was a spamming or vulgarity problem, but there's not. You all say you want to work in a high-stress ATC job but you get worked up about a few redundant posts by "newbies" on an internet message board? Are you serious?

Ahh your theory is flawed... becuase the only way to ahieve a higher "status" is by posting a certain amount. No one would ever "progress"...

Posting a comment is NOT the issue...

Its the posting of new threads, multiple times...WITH OUT LOOKING for an existing one of the same topic/subject.

Care for an example?

Any questions???

I think he hosts like 4 or 5 forums on it.

anyway, hell people can't even keep it down to one thread.

1) Doesn't change the fact that the site is slow as molasses

2) I'm a free-market kind of guy (getting into the wrong profession, i know) :laff:

Don't know how reasonable this might be, but how about sub-forums for:

Application Process
Training Process (CTI/OKC/Developmental)
CPC Progression

I was thinking something along the same lines. I feel like all of the applicants' discussions -- of which I'm often a part -- are overwhelming this area, making it difficult for those looking for other topics. I wouldn't go too far, though; more than three areas would but overfragmented and make it more difficult to find relevant conversations, I think.

How about...

New members are NOT allowed to post a NEW thread until they have reached "Junior Member" status...that is saying....they have taken the time to read, explore and use the SERACH FUNCTION....

Can I get an AMEN to this suggestion???

Not from me, you can't. New people are dropping in here all the time, and this forum is, IMO, the best place on the net to get advice and help on the application process. That means questions will be repeated frequently. Chasing people off or berating them because they're not familiar with the ins and outs of forums doesn't do anybody any good -- it makes the established people look like jerks and discourages new ones from joining and getting the help they need.

If you don't like repeated questions being asked, you're quite welcome to ignore them. I appreciate that you've made a good effort to combine together some of the questions -- as in the AT-SAT thread you created -- that's a good thing to point people to. But if newcomers' unfamiliarity with how to sort the massive amount of information here is frustrating for you, you may want to focus on other parts of the forum. I, for one, am happy to answer the questions that I can -- because I know that's what I'd like done for me.

How bout an ask ATLTRACON...dear Abby section.;) That way I won't have to spend two hours a day answering PM's. 'Course I do type slow and some even say I misspell things.

Maybe it's your internet access.....I do not have any problems with the site being slow. Wait I take that back, during peak hours it is very slow.

How pompous...

I agree with bloomer. However, keep the current stickys and add bloomer's suggestions as new stickys as follows
1) FAA Announcements (Too many repeat threads for these)
2) Application Process and Questions
3) Post-PEPC / Pre-OKC
4) OKC
5) Post-OKC
6) OKC Roommates/Housing Wanted

Sub-forums aren't all that - people just post the same exact threads in each forums just to get a quicker response.

I don't think forum's were designed with any type of seniority "permissions" in the programming. I could be wrong, I just don't think your theory could work.

A great example:
http://forums.jetcareers.com/air-traffic-control/71077-just-a-controllers-opinion.html

I don't disagree that people need to do their research, I was just point out a techincal problem with the theory. As I pointed out above, I don't think sub forums will help. People are lazy and will just post their question in each forum, so you will have 4 times the annoying idiotic questions to sift through.. in each forum.

I agree hands down with the extended filesystem.. but also don't forget to include a huge glossary of terms and definitions like the one I began a while back. I was hoping it would get stickied but i guess no one liked it.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity for feedback, and if you need someone to start the glossary i would be happy to begin a new one for us.

:yeahthat:

I think these forums are fine as-is. I strongly disagree in fragmenting these ATC threads into sub-categories.

Just look at a website like stuckmic.com
They have way too many categories making it confusing and difficult to find information. As others have said, this would simply cause thread replication over multiple categories.

If you look at the forums here on JC, most of the sub-categories are usually quiet. People prefer to go to one big section (either General topics or ATC)
