Former baseball player dies in plane crash

Based on where they were when the video was being taped, I can't think more than 5-minutes to get to the boat. I'm no paramedic, but I would assume that's within the window that CPR isn't futile.

Yeah, I dunno. Were they already on a boat when it started? I didn't know. I had the impression that they were landside when they saw it, got in a boat and went out there. Maybe not?

Wouldn't surprise me. Drowning was the cause of death for all three who went down in a 100 AGL stall/spin in the aircraft I co-owned back in 2008.

That's trailing a close second to fire and just barely leading "stranded in the everglades at night" on my Nightmare Scenarios List.

I remember that day. I think a bunch of us were pinging you trying to get you to check in.

It was crazy. I had flown the plane up to TLH and back with a safety pilot not in our club a week earlier. Joe, the accident pilot, had contacted me middle of the week to see if I wanted to do a fight down to VNC and back with him the day of the accident. I told him I couldn't because we were going to be at Disney where my wife was doing the Disney Marathon, so we agreed to do it a few days later. I had a Nokia phone without texting at the time, and just happened to look at it late in the evening to see like seven messages from my safety pilot. I called him back and he was like "oh thank god you're ok" and I was like "huh?" I hadn't been online all day so had no idea.

I definitely appreciated folks on here reaching out, though.

Another member on here told me a story about a guy going down in the Glades in a 210. Set it down OK and had planned on waiting it out in the plane. Made the mistake of trying to flip on the master to test the radio, which set the plane on fire. Into the swamp he had to go.

Sleep well.

I assumed they were on the boat since there appears to be a wake behind them - as if they had just stopped the motor. Not sure, though.

Looks more like stupid prizes were handed out for playing stupid games then a faulty design from the video.

Watching the video, I am not sure what you all expected the guys responding in the boat to do. It looks like they weren't the first vessel there, first off, so it is quite possible that as they pulled up, the fact the others were just standing and gawking was a pretty clear indication that no one was alive. It looked like you could see a hand sticking out of the mangled wreckage, and it did not look like the body was very accessible without diving and/or risking injury.

Yeah, the guys were annoying, but I don't think this is an example of people unwilling to help.

Haha I get the point of the article, but "CRAZY/LOW STUNTS!" Mhmm, a flyby off the water wings level to a gentle banking climb is CRAY, SON.

Maybe - I just don't get this thing with video/recording solemn events or scenes. We had a guy jump off our parking garage last week and straight into one of the chiller fans for the Airport. Blood and body parts made for a real mess - some concessions employees took it upon themselves to take pictures and go around showing folks.

I also get pissed when pax film a plane side military funeral ceremony. Put your damn phone down and show some respect - it's not about you.

Every second is an event in history, record it if it is interesting and noteworthy. As someone who has always been fascinated by aviation accidents, I am thankful for any footage of them and the aftermath. I am no fan of gore and squeamish in real life, but if it is aviation accident related, I am able to look at it very objectively and it doesn't really bother me. Any of us who fly can end up looking like that, I do understand why people choose to shelter themselves from it of course, but I am in no way against people filming wrecks. If it scares the crap out of someone, good. It should.

Now, I understand that every person(hopefully) means the world to someone, and yes they don't want to see their loved one a mangled mess. Who would? But I personally think there is a huge difference between running up to a guy gasping his last breaths during a heart attack and pulling out your phone to stick in his face, and rolling up to a plane crash and shooting the bodies/aftermath. That is documenting the incident, not gawking at the dead, in my opinion anyway. But I see both sides.

I've filmed the process of a fallen hero arriving on an airliner several times, from the tower where no one could see me and not near the family though. While tragic, it is a beautiful thing to see the respect and honor the whole process is handled with for someone who paid the ultimate price so we can all be at work or traveling, safe from bombs dropping on our heads or any similar thought. I can totally see why people want to share that process with others, not many get to see it, and it is very memorable and humbling for those who witness it from the outside.

The part I'm finding REALLY disheartening about this is that he had considerably more experience flying than I realized. He had a Caravan, if I recall the reading correctly.

Someone recently said they are no longer going to take selfies with fans, because people are less connected when all they want is a photo together. A co-worker and I have joked that we grew up without taking 100 photos each day.

If Halladay didn't crash, he was certainly going to make the 5 o'clock news for his flying. Whether or not he was low or legal, it doesn't matter when it hits the newsroom.

Rule of one people. One pass and it is a surprise. During the second pass, you've lost the element of surprise and the cameras are out and rolling.

.

I don't get the concept of incessant selfie pic taking, and posting of said pics. Anyone I care to know about anything I do, already knows what the hell I look like.

Like those who constantly take pics of their meal they're eating or about to eat. Im not talking every now and again , or if its something really unique or in conjunction with a recipe; but just darn near every meal "this is what im having". Its like busywork facebook postings instead of just posting nothing when nothing of substance is really going on :D

Yeah, I almost can't watch the drowning scene in The Perfect Storm or any of those Navy movies after they close the hatches. Ugh.

Guess "The Abyss" scene (several of them) get to ya?

Read the book. Very interesting twist on the deaths of the submarine crew in that movie.

Not unless you want to live the last 40 years of your life unable to control any of your muscles, or speak any word that isn't a single syllable spelled by only vowels.

It's actually been years since I've seen it, now will have to re-watch. Never read the book, will put it on my recreational reading list!
