For all the 'YouTube' pilots out there....

Everything is up to the PIC. . .

Not under 121, PIC can't authorize a device to be used in contrivenance of the entity who has operating control of the aircraft, IE what is in your GOM/OpSpecs/etc. The airline itself could say cameras were OK, but I doubt Horizon has.

Instead of nabbing some pilots for some videos on youtube...can't they spend their dwindling budget on figuring out ways to fund our ailing ATC system...DOH :banghead:

Re: ALERT! FAA looks at videos taken in cockpits

Anything can interfere with aircraft navigation systems - cats, silverware, China.

Hahaha, so true. That was pretty funny.

On a side note, coa787, I spent a lot of time this summer in/around your stomping grounds. Visited Rocky River a bunch of times and was in Lakewood a decent amount. I must say for a kid from Pittsburgh who is supposed to hate Cleveland, they were both incredibly nice areas. .

Yeah, Rocky River is the better area, Lakewood is okay, Cleveland (especially the east side) is a black hole (No racial pun intended. Is there such a thing? Probably not...). As someone that's lived in on the east side of Cleveland, I can most certainly say that I hate it. Never been to Pittsburgh, though...

I have a buddy who is a captain on a Dash at an airline somewhere. He took some videos on a Part 91 Ferry flight, and some FAA moron saw the N number and tried to take his certs. His company fought for him, and took care of the situation. The FAA is a real "tool" about this stuff. It's not about safety, it's about who is bigger than who...

Not to mention that the Dash is flown VFR all the time to sneak into PHL or LGA... even in 121 ops.

Jace, circling around Shea Stadium is not VFR operation, just visual approach to 31. My young padwan. :p

However, Jace is right. Our FOM does allow VFR operation.

With the exception of filming for training, it is against federal regulations for pilots or passengers to use such devices during takeoffs and landings, as they could interfere with instrument and landing system navigation radios.

Do they just make this stuff up or what?

My understanding is that electronic devices that transmit are prohibited.

EDIT:

Sec. 91.21

Portable electronic devices.

(a) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, no person may operate, nor may any operator or pilot in command of an aircraft allow the operation of, any portable electronic device on any of the following U.S.-registered civil aircraft:
(1) Aircraft operated by a holder of an air carrier operating certificate or an operating certificate; or
(2) Any other aircraft while it is operated under IFR.

(b) Paragraph (a) of this section does not apply to--
(1) Portable voice recorders;
(2) Hearing aids;
(3) Heart pacemakers;
(4) Electric shavers; or
(5) Any other portable electronic device that the operator of the aircraft has determined will not cause interference with the navigation or communication system of the aircraft on which it is to be used.
(c) In the case of an aircraft operated by a holder of an air carrier operating certificate or an operating certificate, the determination required by paragraph (b)(5) of this section shall be made by that operator of the aircraft on which the particular device is to be used. In the case of other aircraft, the determination may be made by the pilot in command or other operator of the aircraft.

It's not illegal to film, even while IFR. Policies of air carriers is a seperate issue.

Part 91 sure. But it's pretty sketchy under 121.

And interesting to know that CJ (and maybe PDT) can complete an entire flight VFR. You learn something every day.
