It's only when you park somewhere and don't fill up it can become an issue. And IIRC, fuel cam come out the fuel vents, or something...I haven't flown a 172 in a few years.
It will drain out also with full tanks if left on closed position, the closed position connects the two wing tanks, and shut off the line to the engine, in the models with integral tanks and overhead connection to even out pressure, fuel will be lost out of the vents even if the plane it`s just slightly leaning on one side. It was a huge and dangerous issue in the 206 H model with the G1000, as often fuel quantity from the fuel flow system and the fuel tank metering system would not match, the only way to fix it would be to fill the tanks again to capacity, which wasn't always possible in my operation.
