Have a look at www.flying-club.org, the list clubs by state. There seemed to be a few in Mass. Depends on how far you are willing to drive.

KLWM - http://www.hawkflyingclub.org/aboutus.html .I don't know anything about the place other than whats on the website. Best thing to do is look up all the airports within 50 miles and they may have links to clubs or such on site.
I agree rental rates are high at BVY but pretty typical of Metro Boston prices. You might find something more reasonable if you're willing to drive 45 minutes / 1 hour for the savings (maybe look into Southern NH and Maine if you are North of Boston)
You could always try and find someone willing to share time and split the cost. Let me know if you have any Q's about the area, either flying or in general.

Oh yeah, I've seen someone on craigslist trying to sell an $11K 1/4 share of a 172 out of KBED for the last 6 months.
