Anyone flown a Middle Eastern airline to Dubai?
Emirates, Gulf, or Qatar?

IF so, what was the experience like? Dubai??? The crew, IFE, service?

Thanks for any replies!!

I’m sorry I’m going off- issue but, how are the airlines doing in your neck of the woods, as far as hiring? I’m curious because I have family in New Zealand, and presumably, the majors out there would be the same in New Zealand. I’m interested partly because I could see myself moving to New Zealand down the road. Any information you could give me on hiring mins, conditions, and hiring would be a great help for me.

Thanks

Hey Mate, yea, no worries mate, basically, the airlines such as Qantas and AIr New Zealand (majors) are starting to recruit again, ever so slowly, but surley.

The new Jetstar LCC (owned by Qantas) is entering into service, with first flight on 25th MAY, so theyve been recruiting, Virgin Blue is always taking applications, but im not sure how much they are actually hiring.

The minimums are very similar for most airlines in the region.
they are as follows....'

Minimum of NZ Commercial Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) and hold theory examination credits for issue of NZ Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) or equivalent foreign licence.
Minimum Three 'C' passes in the Seventh Form Bursary Examinations and Higher School Certificate, or a total of 16 or less in your 4 best Sixth Form Certificate subjects including a Grade 5 or better in English. The preferred subjects are English, Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.
Minimum 500 hours including 100 hours Air Transport Operations and 25 hours Night Flying (Note: Most successful applicants have in excess of 2,000 hours, including 500 hours Air Transport Operations and over 150 hours Night Flying).
Current Multi-Engine Instrument Rating and BGT Rating.
If not a New Zealand or Australian citizen, hold a permanent New Zealand or an Australian residency permit.
Medical criteria for selection as Air New Zealand flight crew are the responsibility of the Company, and may not be equivalent to regulatory authority standards for licence renewal. Specialist reports will be required if there are restrictions on the medical certificate other than a requirement to wear spectacles for distant or near vision.

Thats pretty much standard for the airlines here. The one listed above is for Air New Zealand.

My dad flew for emirates from 1989-2000. I would visit him for a month in the winter and two months during the summer(yup 120 degree humid summers). Anyways, Dubai is 100% different now then it was back then. It literally changes every year. It's a very metropolitan city, and is often refered to as the Las Vegas of the middle east. There are very low crime rates, the main language is english and they have more McDonalds around every corner than an average American city. The government is very conservative and protecting of the locally born Arab's. They essentially have immunity from any foreigners. For example, when I was there one year, this son of a sheikh was driving about 120 MPH down a small two lane highway and a young british girl was crossing the street at the time. It was the man's fault for not stopping yet in the end, nothing was done to him. I think the government paid the family some money for their grievances and sent them on their merry way.

As far as the airline, Emirates, I loved them. I got to go see all the training centers for the airline and fly the B777 sim for about 20 minutes. I think I was about 16 or 17 at the time. The people that work for the airline were a huge melting pot of ethnicities. At the time, they were hiring a lot of foreign pilots. Many Brit's to be exact. However, I think more recently they are increasing the number of Arab's, yet are still hiring foreigners at a good rate.
My dad still has a friend who flies for them, that would come by our house once a year when he would go to Seattle to pick up their B777's and fly them back to UAE.
Overall, I have nothing but good things to say about the place. I'd love to live their someday but probably never will because our family decided to settle here in the states.

Hi there mate,

I quite couldn’t understand the education part. Is sixth form equivalent of a bachelors? Do majors require a bachelors just like here (stateside), or will it just give me an edge? Also, is there a big distinction between regionals and majors? Thanks a lot for the info, much appreciated.

Thanks mrivc211, sounds good.
Ive heard its really developing very fast, and changes all the time. I went there in 93, but i cant remember much, because it was just a stop over on a MH flight to Vienna.

What did your dad fly for Emirates? FO or CPT?
Was the accomodation he recieved from Emirates any good?

I heard they hire alot of Canadians English and Ozzies.
It is an expensive place to live? Like are vechicles expensive? Food ect?

I think theyll be hiring for a while with the fleet expansions they have planned.

Thanks for your help mate, good to hear someones actually been there, and had someone fly for Emirates.

Thanks

Conan,
You need a high school certificate with those subjects...however a degree would put you ina better place.

With regionals, the requirements are lower, however not by much. Like, Regional Express, which is the largest regional carrier in OZ, still requires something like 1500hr total time,
ATPL, 500hr PIC multi engine aircraft, operating under IFR procedures.

So they are lower, but still need a few hours.

Good luck.

Dubia the new Hong Kong - great place I definately want to go there some day. I want to stay at Burj Al Arab.

I'm still bitter about them building that hotel. They had to bulldoze our house down after we left to build that hotel. We literally lived on the beach where it now sits.

He initially was hired as Captain in 89' in the B727. Then went into the A300/310 as Captain in 93'. Followed by his final move to the B777 in I beleive it was 98'.

The company paid for all housing which was second to none. As I said before we lived on the beach in a private gated community next to Mansions that belonged to the sheikh's.

It is still awesome!!!! Probably the best hotel in the world!

Sounds pretty sweet!!!!
I wonder if they still offer such good accomodation for their employees in the troubled airline times these days.

ALthough from what i saw on their annual report, they seem to have made 76% profit on last yr!!!! Thats damn good.

Apparently the staff recieved 10weeks basic salary as a bonus!

Who does your father fly for now? Why did he leave Emirates?

So what was the living like? Cars, food, general living? Expensive or resonable?

Thanks again fro your help mate!

Well, he retired from Emirates in 2000. He then came out of retirement last year and went back and flew A300-600's for Ariana Afghan Airlines. I guess he went back because he missed it so much. He was 62 when he went back last year. Age restriction for them over there is 65. When he got there, they were doing things that were unsafe, and illegal. He gave his resignation and came back two months ago.

As far as living in Dubai, it was like a dream. Honestly, my brother, sister, mom, dad and I always think back of the fond memories we had of the place. I mean, we would literally have to be millionaires to live like that here in Orange County, CA. The community had everything from its own restuarant, coffee shop, swimming pool, b-ball courts, raquet ball courts, tennis, its own private beach with crystal clear blue water and near white sand, the homes were beautiful. Guarded 24 horus a day, the airline would send brand new Volvo car's to pick up the crew from their own houses. You didn't have to drive to the airport. Interest free loans were provided for various reasons. Free private school for the kids. the list goes on and on and on. The travel was the best. Always first class, and let me tell you, this wasn't United Airlines first class ( no offense). Emirates is like no other! By far thee best service and comfort airline out there. Always treated employees with class A respect.

I'm starting to get teary eyed thinking about it again!

just kidding. My dad always teases me about going back and flying for them so that we could all go back and live in Dubai. But I dont' know if that would ever happen.

I've never flown into Dubai, but I have visited there and Jebel Ali (sp?) numerous times while stationed on an aircraft carrier patroling the Persian Gulf. Short of Sydney/Perth Australia, the U.A.E. was the best place we visited. Much better than Korea and Yokosuka, Japan (sp?) It was eye opening to see the vast differences between the areas. One minute we were in the Hyatt Regency Dubai on the ice rink, the next minute we were riding camels through the sand dunes in the desert. Then the next minute we were back in the Hyatt at the nightclub. I was not there for a long time, but everyone that I encountered was extremely nice. You just had to respect their culture and you would be treated more than fairly. There was of course a few yahoo's that did stupid things like take pictures of some women in there traditional garb. Not a good thing to do. Anyhow, to wrap it up is was a very nice place to visit and when I win the lottery, I would love to go back.

Don't you have to be a millionaire to live in OC to begin with with!?!?!?

Well, it sure sounds like the place to be, i mean i cant believe you got picked up from your home to go to the airport. I think thats all a thing of the past.
Also, First class with Emirates? I guess the family would have a discount rate on that too? Sounds like the airlines does take care of its staff.

Ive heard rumours about that, but never actually heard it from someone that experienced it.
Whats the night life like in DXB?

What are you currently flying? Perhaps in a couple of yrs, Emirates will be an option for you!!!

Good luck, if theyre still hiring Ozzies in 10yrs, ill look at them!

I'm currently flying big ole 172's! But am awaiting training at Skywest airlines (of the USA not the AUS one) to fly the EMB-120. Looking forward to it more and more.

BY the way, Iain, where the HELL you been? AHAHAH

Sounds good mate, good luck.

One day youll be sitting on a EK777 in the CPT seat, and some ozzie bloke will walk in claiming to be ya FO!! Thatll be me!! hehe

Whats the time to command in emirates, do you know?

How many hours did you have when being accepted into Skywest?

Cheers mate!

They tore your house down to build that hotel? You should be compensated with a free month stay
grin.gif
I remember my Dad always talking about that hotel and how he wanted to stay there if he ever visited, but then he found out the nightly prices. I actually almost moved there in January for school, and to learn more about the culture. Then I figured if I was going to live in the Middle East I would have to live in Beirut. Have you been to Beirut mrivc211?

Well that would be kinda tough when Emirates paid for the homes!

Beirut? No, never have. I hear it used to be a nice place before all the fighting in the 70's. I have this video of my dad doing an approach into there and taping all the buildings to the side of him, man, you would think your in NYC!

Well..........I had 1300TT and 150ME, however to be honest the time meant nothing. Everyone these days has the time. It was an interview captain that got me the interview and put in a very good word for me!
