We are looking for a full-time Flight Test Engineer for our flight operations team based at Garmin's Salem, Oregon facility. As a Flight Test Engineer at Garmin, you'll be responsible for working closely with Engineering to become familiar with product architecture and assist development with flight testing and certification perspectives that help ensure compliance with applicable FAA requirements and partnering with associates responsible for avionics equipment installation and preparation of test aircraft to obtain the proper configuration for the required testing.
You’ll also have the opportunity to plan test flights and prepare flight test data cards to ensure proper data is gathered efficiently and safely, performing in flight crewmember duties including operating test equipment, gathering and recording test data, and in-flight analysis, and handling data retrieval and analysis responsibilities involving providing test data to assist development of systems, determine compliance with requirements, and to provide certification basis for the desired products.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•Drafts ground and flight test plans and reports for moderately complex test programs derived from previous programs
•Coordinates and executes moderately complex flight tests as part of a flight test crew, including acting as test director
•Defines, documents, and maintains moderately complex test aircraft and equipment configurations, and coordinates with engineering teams
•Operates flight test tools, conducts real time data analysis, and post processes flight test data.
•Identifies root cause and verifies that issues identified during flight test are resolved
•Prepares moderately complex avionics system installation data for test aircraft.
•Leverages basic understanding of certification process and associated regulations in performance of role
•Offers suggestions to improve processes and the safety of the flight test organization
•Provides reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques
•Serves as a mentor to less experienced flight test engineers (Flight Test Engineer 1)
•Applies a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
•Applies Garmin’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Quality Policy and enthusiastically exhibits a desire to see Garmin succeed
OTHER KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Modifies equipment and aircraft configurations for development and certification while coordinating with engineering labs and Flight Operations
• Responsible for documentation of aircraft level changes and general equipment configuration
• Creates and maintains tools for managing flight test activities
• Must be knowledgeable of applicable avionics certification requirements and regulations
You may also assist in development of flight testing procedures necessary to establish and maintain an FAA ODA (Organization Designation Authorization) facility for Garmin products, establish positive working relationship with necessary FAA personnel to ensure effective communication and coordination during certification projects, and support testing activities at aircraft manufacturers’ facilities to assist the manufacturer in obtaining a Type Certificate certification for Garmin equipment on their product.
