Flight Instructor Pay

Have to have instrument students and/or 325 students to collect CFII/MEI pay, I believe. If that's not the case, my lead and I may have to have words :D.
For me it was if you were willing to work with instrument students you got the CFII pay. I was annoyed that I would be assigned CFI's after the first few lessons to finish them, but since they weren't mine from the start they didn't bump my pay. It played into the fact of wanting to leave. I could have been happier for much longer if I was compensated for the work I performed.

Once you earn the pay bump, you keep it. They can't downgrade you just because you don't have an instrument student put on your schedule, if you had the pay grade in the past. Before I got the 414 bump this semester I only had single-engine students but I still made MEI pay.

Odd, my 414 was put on my schedule about 1/3rd into his training, and I got the bump.

Seems like it really depends on your lead what happens with pay--I know of at least 2 leads who "creatively" interpreted these rules to bump people back down.

Yeah from the best I can gather, the "UND Experience" as far as instructing goes really depends on what lead you get. I've been lucky, I've had three (well, 3.5) really, really good leads.

I'm curious if someone can comment on this. I'm doing 414 in the spring and as a part time it looks like I would make 12 dollars an hour (according to the payscale on the last page). If I stayed in the summer to do my CFII, would my pay increase to the level 3 even if I was part time? Or is there another scale somewhere for working part time undergrad with your CFI & CFII?

You would need to have at least four students in order to break away from the part time pay rate.

No your pay will not increase. I had my cfii and 4 students while I was still in school and I still got 12 an hour. You need to be put full time to get the higher pay.

Okay thanks for the responses guy, not really what I was hoping for but glad I know now. Five students as an undergrad just sounds insane with trying to finish up school, I'd just be worried about paying bills come November and stuff, but I guess everyone experiences that...

414 should be fun/interesting, looking forward to flying another different airplane :)

Talk to your lead? 4 students = full time, 6 students = full time with benefits.

At the time my lead told me that because I was still a student, he could not put me as a full time instructor. No longer at UND but I always wondered if I was getting screwed working with that many students and getting the part time rate.

Not necessarily screwed but different leads apply the rules differently, unfortunately. I was on full time CFII rate for my last year in school because at the beginning of the fall semester I had a summer finish up, an air china 221, and a new student at the same time.
