Flight Instructor Pay

Man right now I wish I had a full student load, I'm lucky to make 15 hours a week at entry pay and I'm having to use student loans to help cover rent.

I know that feeling, that lasted a year. I'm looking for other jobs in town... if I find one I'll try to pass on some students. I have mostly 323's, but I'm about to get some 222's.

Do you have your CFII?

If you don't, get it fast, that's the money right there.

So after a little bit of quick head math I just came to the conclusion that my Air China student earns more per week than I do and has all his living expenses paid for.

flip my life.

Yeah, but he signed a 99 year contract.

Then again, he'll always have all of his living expenses paid, work 15 days a month, AND make more than $140,000 US eventually. His starting pay when he starts will be around $40,000, but they'll have no debt.

I'm tellin ya... regulation is great.

im curious to see how many people who are pro-airline-regulation are also republicans.

they are not compatible ideas.

Yeah I'm a die hard liberal and environmentalist.

I cruise at 55% power... baby! (oh, and cause I've got my groove on I save 5 minutes on ground at still get to the airport same time as you... Boo Yeah!)

I just found out that if I moonlight as a CFI at the place where I work as an A&P, I make $25/hour.

If I freelance I could probably get away with 30-40 an hour.

My previous gig was about $16/hour.

The only disadvantage is where I work now doesn't have benefits.

I was free-lancing in Park River during my last days in the frozen tundra. These guys were LOADED and very generous. 50/hour. I made about the same per month with 2 students versus the crazy 16 hour days at UND. Anyone still working at UND that's looking for some extra cash, go full stop at these satellite airports and chit chat with the locals. I found these 2 guys from just BSing with a guy that does crop dusting in the area.(while my student was losing his lunch, perfect timing!) He mentioned that there were 2 guys that just bought a plane and neither had their certificates. He asked if I knew anyone with some free time. Uh, THIS GUY!

I don't know if you were here instructing when it was common to just put 0.5 on the pre/post and be done with it, hence the 16 hour days, but nowadays we're encouraged to pre/post what we think is a fair amount. I typically run 0.5 pre and about 0.3 to 0.5 post.

I always put what was actually done. Got criticised a couple times for it too!

UND and I head butted quite a bit over minor things. This being one of them. I'm not entirely sure my former lead has many nice things to say about me regarding a few things...

Current pay scale:

Level 1 - $12.25/hr - Part-Time, CFI only.
Level 2 - $15.25/hr - Full-Time, CFI only.
Level 3 - $18.25/hr - Full-Time, CFI/II.
Level 4 - $20.75/hr - Full-Time, CFI/II/MEI.
Level 5 - $25.00/hr - Full-Time, 414 qualified/stage checks.

Are they doing level 5 if you're actively teaching 414, or if you're qualified now? I remember I would teach the last half of 414's but didn't get the bump as they weren't primary students. It's the little things that get to you over time.

"Qualified and assigned to teach Initial CFI students and conduct stage checks"

Emphasis mine, so negative on just being qualified. My mistake in the verbiage there!

What really can bite you is the part time vs full time pay situation. I only moved up the payscale in my time there, but some of my friends would have their pay cut to level 1 as soon as a student finished.

Does "qualified and assigned" also pertain to CFII and MEI pay?

No, just CFI Initial.
but some of my friends would have their pay cut to level 1 as soon as a student finished.

That was probably their lead "creatively interpreting" the payscale rules, which is very unfortunate. When I was hired, we were told that once you moved up, you didn't move down unless you didn't allow yourself to be scheduled full time.

Have to have instrument students and/or 325 students to collect CFII/MEI pay, I believe. If that's not the case, my lead and I may have to have words :D.
