This is a question for the current CFIs at UND. There is another thread going on about the lousy CFI pay at ERAU, but that reminded me that the CFI pay at UND wasn't any better. Can anyone verify if this payscale is still current?

$9.36 Part Time
$12.65 Full Time CFI
$15.40 Holds CFII, Assigned Instrument Student
$17.16 Holds MEI, Assigned Multi Student
$20.80 Teaches Initial CFI Applicants
 
That pay scale is not current. Here is the most current one as of July 1st.
Level 1 - Student Intern part time CFI
>> $11.50/hr

Level 2 - Hold a CFI and working full time
>> $14.50/hr

Level 3 - Hold a CFII, teaching instrument students, and working at least 4 students
>> $17.50/hr

Level 4 - Hold s a MEI, teaching 325 and/or 416, and working with at least 4 students
>> $19.75/hr

Level 5 - Assigned to teach 414 and conduct stage checks
>> $24.00/hr
 
Yeah, that would be fine pay if we had guaranteed pay to start. However, winter's really end up stinking. Unless you do stage checks, it's hard to make this a career here.
 
Look's to be on par with ERAU. That's just sad. I'm afraid to ask, but what are they charging students these days?

$11.50/hr for a part-time CFI? What a joke.
 
I believe it is 47 dollars an hour for the students.

Ill be getting an nice pay raise this semester though. Whoohooo!!
 
Yeah, I think it's $53 here an hour at UND. I THINK... not sure, I know we had a boost about a year back but the # of hours we're getting with contract students has been lowering the cost of aircraft.
 
Wow, instructor costs shot through the roof since I started there in 2004! I remember paying $32/hr for instructor and $84/wet for a Warrior and $99/wet for an Arrow. The Seminoles I think were $205/hr.
 
Well yeah, things change. I have no idea what the actual costs are, but rates for flight instructor PD are something like $60/WARR/WARG, $72/C172, $84/ARRO, and I think the SEMI is $184.

Remember though, these are all wet times, and avgas costs have changed a lot in the last few years.

Nope. Its 47 dollars an hour. Just looked at my aims.
 
Speaking as someone who worked for a school that did it, paying flight instructors different hourly rates based on part time vs. full time is STUPID. Your instruction should be worth the same whether you're there 60 hours a week or 10.

Differentiate based on hours of dual given, that is probably the best quantifiable metric to determine what a CFI is worth. In that case, the full-timers will advance up the pay scale quicker, but there is no good reason to pay 2 instructors of the same experience and competence differently based solely on part time/full time status.
 
Don't feel bad, the instructors at Purdue are making minimum wage...I think $7.25/hr now? We don't do much better at the FBO, charge $40/hr and se see less than 1/2 that.
 
I don't think the pay is all that bad. I wasnt working while going to school prior to instructing at UND so that extra money helps a bit. Of course for people who have a lot of living expenses may think differently.
 
When I was at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University the pay was not that much better.

Ground training-$8/hr

Teach ground school-$10/hr

Simulator-$10/hr

Single-Engine CFI-$15/hr

Check CFI-$17/hr

Multi-Engine CFI-$20/hr

Now everyone, please, don't go rushing to Tennessee for $0.50 more in pay!

You are every regional airlines wet dream. I guess $21/hour to fly an RJ is not all that bad either? If the student is charged $50/hr., the CFI should at least get half. You are doing all the work. Seriously, $11.50 for a part time CFI?

Not to start a fire storm here but I probably would fly an RJ for 21 dollars an hour right now as like I said before, I dont really need much to live although that is hardly enought to live on. Look at the bright side, at least I would have a job...
It is 47 dollars an hour for instruction so if the CFI gets a 1/3 of that, other costs supposedly go for a number of other things. I remember a while back someone came into one of my classes and told us what that extra money was being used for.
1. Administration salaries
2. Shuttle bus
3. Insurance costs

Thats all I know.:confused:

Is it B.S? YES.
Do I complain? no because I know I cant change it.

No kidding. You should just go ahead and quit...that will stick it to the man. I mean you are going to leave him in a lurch and he will be short handed. Guess he should have thought of that before he made you quit...thus making him go through the hassle of hiring one of the DOZENS of eager CFIs begging for a job.

That's how you fight the system!
