Flight Attendant Rant.

Nah....I think you're right about the glamour and hopes but it's not really the jet-set life they wanted....it's the "settled" SAHM life with kids and a roof over their head they don't have to worry about paying. Since they didn't get the "connection" they were hoping for, they tend to take it out on everyone and passengers notice it too.

now they can't compete anymore like Firebird said and they're bitter about having to continue to work like everyone else.

What...you mean the 5 or 6 cats aren't giving them a fulfilling life?:sarcasm:

Good for you for pitching in even if it's just a smile or a nice conversation with a pax. They really appreciate it! :)
So as not to be accused of "hating women," sometimes FA's are grumpy for a number of reasons. Hunger (we sometimes go all day without any "real" food--quick turns, delays, etc), fatigue (16 hour duty days due to mx/wx delays) or sometimes you're dealing with a crew you're not too crazy about. (Believe it or not, some pilots are a-holes!) That's still not an excuse for the poor behavior, though. You have to hold it together and deal with the other problems out of view of the pax. Sorry, you signed on for the job and you have to deal with it--if not, quit!
BTW, are you telling me pilots aren't wealthy sugar daddies? Damn, why did I get into this business then? ;) :D :p

Sometimes you just get a sorry FA too. Sorry to be blunt about it, but they are out there. Had one at ASA on time, she used to come in the cockpit and bitch about the paxs getting on. I finally couldn't take it anymore when she stated, "This job would be fun if I didn't have to deal with passengers."
My response was, "So we'll just fly around with an empty plane so you can sit in the back? Who do you think provides the money for your paycheck, and why did you take the job in the first place?"

Her answer was indicative of her work ethic. "That would be nice. And I took the job for the travel benefits. If I'd known that I'd have to deal with A-holes all day, I would have done something else."

So the captain finally get involved and says, "So why don't you just quit?"

The look on her face was priceless. Kind of a WAAA? look and then she just storms out. Didn't see her the rest of the flight. Actually it was kind of peaceful.

Oh, I agree with you 100%. I wasn't making excuses for anybody! She sounds like a real pleasure to work with and smart as a whip!
I actually had a classmate who proclaimed DURING training that she hated pilots. She even told some guys right to their face fresh out of training. She also proclaimed her disdain for pax as well. The kicker? She was a DL FA for 12 years! Is there something in the water over there?
Oh and BTW, she's not OLD....she's mid 30's... ;)
Good for you and the CA answering her back, and making her feel foolish. She deserved it! Sometimes you guys are too nice and let things slide.

Usually the distain for pilots comes from being screwed over literally and figuratively by one. Most of these FA have bounced from relationship to relationship and after getting burned a few times that influences their view. Pilots definitely play a part in shaping that view.

And you know this, how??!!

J/K ;)

By being subjected to their prattle in my own home! It's one thing to listen to them at work, but when they come over to the house, (remember, my wife is a FA,) I get stuck listening at home. Unless I have a "project" which needs attending to in the man cave. Usually either checking the bandwith of the router or the signal strengh of the DirectTV.

It's funny, but at AA there weren't many F/As with a hatred of pilots. When I was marooned in LGA in the summer of 2002 I did a transcon with an LAX F/A crew. I was the only one of the 10 of us under the age of 50 and with less than 20 years with the company, it was an interesting experience. Out of the 9 of them, 8 were quite nice, kind and helpful to everyone (pax and crew), *1* had a MAJOR raving anti-pilot attitude. Just one. Out of 9 pretty senior ladies. That pretty much seemed to be the going rate there. At least from what I saw. Most could take or leave the pilots, but few really had a hatred of them.

When I was new with AA, in the spring of 2001, there were gobs of new-hire pilots AND F/As coming onboard. It was a total party atmosphere. Life was great. A F-100 CA in YVR once picked up our entire bar tab (well over $100 for the 4 of us). Another in DCA paid for our dinner (ALL of us, his newhire F/O, the other F/A and me.) Did mention the F-100 crews rocked? I liked the F-100.

Those were good times........ :(

That makes some sense. Nurses often cop that attitude about doctors as well. I dunno, but if I found myself becoming a bitter woman because some dude or series of dudes burned me, and I hated my job as well, I think I'd go find myself another occupation! Plain and simple...but then some people enjoy misery.

I remember back when my ex was in med school, we were at a hospital event and I was chatting with a nurse who told me that she hated nursing, and only went into it in order to be around doctors so that she could find one to marry and then quit nursing. She told me that I was foolish for marrying a man and putting him through medical school and residency and that she only had eyes for the attending physicians. One of the surgical residents overheard her, and as he walked by he said, "Yeah, but Brenda isn't a golddigger"...she actually laughed and said, "But I am!"....LOL....

I've got to agree with you about the animosity between pilots and FA's, Amber. I haven't seen any yet at Colgan. If anything, we all seem to be getting along quite well. It's a bit amazing to me since most of us are new to the profession and the first pilots on the Q were the Colgan veterans. They've exhibited great patience with us and are always eager to help us out and back us up any way they can. Are there pilots I prefer over others? Absolutely, but that's just a personality issue, nothing to do with professionalism and cooperation.

personally, i don't really care how they treat me, i'm using the benefits.. but i do feel for the other pax that get the same crappy treatment, they're paying for that bad attitude..

Hey, just because you're a non-rev doesn't mean you deserve crappy treatment. From my experience, our F/As go out of their way to be nice to DHers, commuters and non-revvers.

(Believe it or not, some pilots are a-holes!)

Say it ain't so! :laff:

BTW, are you telling me pilots aren't wealthy sugar daddies? Damn, why did I get into this business then? ;) :D :p

:yup: Good job, boys, we faked out ANOTHER one!

Competition. They're mad they can't compete anymore.

Compete for what? 25 year-olds?

It's probably true that some older women who reveal bitter jealousy toward younger women feel threatened by youth, but how do you know it's all about "competition"?

Maybe they have some other prejudice against young women. Like, maybe young women aren't working as hard these days. Have you seen the media lately? Generations are getting lazier and lazier, feeling more and more entitled.

It might be nice to assume it's all about men - that everything women do, feel, or fight about is over men - but I think you might be surprised to learn we have many priorities.

"They're mad they can't compete anymore" implies mature women flight attendants as a general rule are somehow out of the sexual game.

And you're quite wrong. If they feel the need to "compete," they can. And they'll do quite well - probably just not with the men who want very young women. (Great loss, that. )

Compete for what? 25 year-olds?

It's probably true that older women who feel jealousy toward younger women feel threatened by youth, but frankly, what they're afraid they can't compete for are the men who want 25 year-old women.

And that type of woman is a SPECIFIC type of woman defending what she views as desirable (for whatever reason) territory. Men have their own chest-puffing that they do...specific types of men, that is...that is equally petty and ridiculous and has much to do with proving who is more virile or masculine.

Kristen, I didn't think of it that way, but you are correct. I'll admit, seeing your youth fade and realizing you're on the back 9 of your life is a bit depressing, but to assume mature women are out of the sexual game is a baaaad assumption. :p

BTW, the bids just came out for April and I see some lines have BDL layovers. Maybe I'll get to meet you and Ian after all!

That sad, typically American situation. Older, established males (Strom Thurmond!) can attract young women, but the vice isn't always versa.

And that type of woman is a SPECIFIC type of woman defending what she views as desirable (for whatever reason) territory.

I was on the employee bus once a long time ago listening to an older DAL gal biatching: "I'm #30 of 30,000 Delta employees and I'm STILL bidding #6 in this crew base."

Young bucks generally are when considering who is a player and who isn't. Its generally a function of excessive testosterone.

Cool!

i edited my response, btw. both seem true, but I didn't want to be long-winded. Glad you caught this one - now they're both here!

Let's just say I know SEVERAL older F/As who are infinitely more interesting to spend time with than the youngsters.

And leave it at that.

I might fly a couple of your ex F-100's very soon... ;)
