Flap retraction during landing roll

What distraction.. most of us can raise the flaps without ever thinking of how to do it. In that case i might as well not make a wind correctiong or rudder correction casue it might distract me from rolling down the runway. Some people take things way too seriously.

I rent an airplane as a Private Pilot and I fly it how i fly it.

If you have not yet rented a plane with retractable gear, you are missing one part of this argument. I bet you'd think twice on landing roll about what level your fingers are touching. If it's the wrong one, it could be ugly.

The thinking at that moment is a distraction.

You may fly however you want. For the purpose of this thread (the question was what to teach), though, I think it's best to TEACH a private pilot student to just concentrate on flying the airplane before anything else.

Your right, when i fly the seminole i dont touch anything till im off the runway, thats :sitaware: of the aircraft im in. When i fly the 172 i get the flaps up becasue I feel it puts more weight on the wheels sooner and with a top heavy airplane i feel better that way.

I do fly the airplane first, its just a natural reaction to put the flaps up..its how the school that i rent from taught me and its what i did on my checkride.

Well...the thread's on to page 5 now. Who's going to be the first to get called a nazi? :)

Can I be the first to mention that the gear lever is round and feels like a little wheel while the flaps are shaped sort of like a wing generally? Can you guys not feel between a round lever and a flat one?

Funny you mention that. My flight schhol a while back had a student on his first smeinole flight hit the gear up on landing thinking it was the flaps handle in the 172, and down went the nose wheel.

There it is.

It's not when someone gets called it, it's when someone 'says' it.

... and for those of you not watching the gun control thread ...

Dance on!

PLEEEASE don't represent ERAU with this "holy'er than thou" attitude. You should know from the flight training at Riddle that we do the "identify-verify" procedure for a reason.

Wait till you get in a Bonanza or something similar where the flap lever and gear lever are inches apart.

Just keep an open mind Champ.

I dont fly at Riddle, never have never will. Why, because i think there flight training is a joke.

And if you read further then you will see that I act differently in different airplanes.:sitaware:

So do me a favor and knock off the personal attacks.

Did you ever try the flight training at ERAU? Or are you judging on what you have heard from other people? The flight training there could be less expensive for sure, but there curriculum is very similar to that of UND's, Ohio University, and many others. I learned a lot during my flight training at Riddle, I did not consider it a joke.

BTW, wasn't attacking, just observing from the posts I've seen on this thread. IMO, they portray a close minded approach.

And what do you mean "act differently in different airplanes"? Don't understand that.

Geez, my flight school's winkie is bigger than your flight school's winkie! My Grog!

Anyway, at least on transport category aircraft, the FAA will have your ass if you touch the flap handle or even the speedbrake handle before exiting the runway.

IMHO, if you need to radically change the configuration of the aircraft to get into a particular runway, land at a longer runway and drive.

Does retracting the flaps help? In some aircraft, sure!

Does the potential decrease in the landing roll figure by retracting the flaps eclipse the massive potential of grabbing the gear handle instead? No!

You might save 20 feet, but in my professional opinion, it's not worth it.

Hehe, it does sound kinda childish doesn't it. Boy did we beat this dead horse!! I can tell Doug is tired of this thread! (me included; I dunno what it is but I........just......can't.....resist....)

Time to move on. Next topic: 10,000 post thread? ;)
