First type rating

As the title says, I'm going in for my first type rating in a Phenom 100 at CAE. I have no idea what to really expect, it kinda feels like I'm starting from zero hours again. Any tips or gotchas that I should watch out for? I've never used Jeppesen charts so any good training links would be helpful. Coming from a 206 so it feels like it'll be a long but doable jump for me.

Good luck. I used this video for my interview prep coming from NACO to Jepp. Pretty detailed and shows comparisons really well. It helped me.

Review the approaches at JFK. Straight in and circling. Pretty good chances that your sim sessions will take place at JFK.

Otherwise, don't study too much before you get there. You may be studying incorrect material and memory items.

They will teach you all the systems and airplane specific stuff. If you want to get a jump start, limitations and memory items are good to have down rote, as you'll be practicing many of them in the sim and CBTs as you get there.

JFK good tip. I was sent the online course for systems that is required before I arrive, I've been hitting that and limitations perdy hard.

I would call them and make sure you have the right memory items and systems stuff CAE wants, since you've already had one person tell you not to study too much in case it's the wrong memory items, and another tell you to memorize it all so you have it down rote. o_O

Well, my stuff was sent directly from CAE so I'd hope it's the right stuff. I guess my real question is...Are there any procedures or "in the system" knowledge items I may want to review that I never used flying a single piston? I dont have my ATP...yet

When I got my first type in 2007, a CE-525(s) I got some invaluable advice from a mentor.

Study the following:

-Limitations
-Bold Face
-Annunciator Panel

So since this was back in the day some of it no longer applies or the vernacular has changed a little. The limitations should be committed to memory. Preferably before ground school. I do this with flash cards. When he said "bold face" and annunciator panel that has changed a little but still applies. You also want to memorize the memory items and the associated ECIAS message. This has actually gotten easier with every aircraft that I have flown as they get more modern. The E-175 being the easiest of them all.

I assume the corporate jungle jet will be pretty easy if you have the limitations and 10 or so memory items committed to memory.

Sleep good every night. Take good notes. Pay attention. And if something isn't clicking in the sim, speak up early.

I'd also call to see what instrument procedures you'll be using, or at least what airports to expect.

Good luck. We're all counting on you. :)

Go in with the understanding that you will leave with way more questions than answers. Phenom program there is horribly disorganized!

Part time instructor in the Phenom here.

Take your time during the computer based training, but do not try and learn everything. Ground school will review all of that and add some more, but is very realistically paced (the 100 especially is designed for lower time pilots and owner operators). Normal day is ground from 9-2/3 followed by a 2-3 hour avionics lab. You get an extra sim versus the other programs, primarily to deal with the Garmin, which is a major hangup for some guys, especially the ex-airline drivers.

It is the only Phenom program in the world aside from NJ, so the sim does stay very busy and works from early in the morning until late in the evening. They're also down quite a few instructors, so you may have more than the normal two during sims.

Review what you can about Jepps, but you don't need to get into the nitty gritty of them, just know how to brief them and find the important stuff. FAA: JFK is the primary airport, but you'll also see TEB, FRG, PHL, DCA, IAD, RNO, SFO and depending on your company potentially ASE, EGE, DFW, TUS, PDX, SNA, and SMO. If you're EASA; EHAM, EHRD, EGLL, EGKK, LSGG, LSZH, and potentially EGLC, LFPB, Chamberry, Sion, and numerous others.

The program is better off than a lot of others at CAE because it's part owned by Embraer, but that adds complexities when you need something. I'll respectfully disagree with the post above, it's been the best program I've done at both CAE and FSI.

If there's anything else I can help you with, feel free to PM me and I can give you a call plus see if I'm teaching you any (I hope not, for your sake).

That changes my earlier statement. Go ahead and study that material. Most people get material from a friend's ex-brother in law that went through ______ type school X years ago... which is a recipe for incorrect information.
