FedEx Feeders

Lol that's not something I would ask in an interview. I was just curious. I didn't know if the interviewer asks you if there's a particular base you wanted if they have multiple openings, or if a base is assigned to you.

I hired people who wanted to work at specific bases. The question of moving to a different base later came up all the time and I welcomed any question a person had.

How difficult is it to get the base you want at the feeders? Does base choice become easier with seniority?

At MAC, you can apply to whatever base we have open per our job openings. We also have gateway basing (quite a few cities) for floater pilots in both the Caravan and ATR.

Why wouldn't you ask that question? There are jobs I would describe as lucky to have. In the current market I would say there are also jobs they are lucky to have us. Don't sell yourself short, interview them too!

I guess I would ask only if they brought it up and asked ME if there was a base I was interested in getting. I'd prefer to pick a base that's nearest to family, but if that doesn't work out, it definitely wouldn't be a deal breaker

when I worked for a 135 freight operator I had a chance to speak to some UPS pilots in Louisville that had been part of the hiring process.

verbatim on what they said:

" NO! working at the feeders does nothing extra for you, in fact throwing boxes in a truck goes very far!"

Not exactly a good example as UPS and FedEx operate their feeder aircraft in completely different ways. UPS is basically a contract with unaffiliated outfits like Ameriflight, Martinaire, etc. FedEx owns all of their feeder aircraft and leases them to each feeder operator. FedEx also funds the fuel/maintenance among other things in its feeder operation, UPS doesn't seem to be as "hands-on" so to speak. .

still...I've heard it more then a dozen times that feeder jobs don't help you at all...they don't hurt but I've only heard of a few from the multi crew feeders get on board but usually with other circumstances(mostly family)

it's just they way it is...

It is. There is some truth to the fact that (FedEX at least) looks favorably on having worked in their operation in some other capacity once you have the requisite experience to apply....i.e. delivery driver, etc.

Ameriflight and IFL carry almost all of the freight out of MIA, BQN, and SJU...

The MAC guys aren't confident at all that where they are is at all advantageous. No special treatment has been seen at least.

Somewhat on subject..Empire has a rare opening for a 'Van spot here in a ABQ if anyone's interested (I imagine the position is posted on climbto350 and the likes). I work for the UPS feeder out of ABQ and frequently chat with the Empire guys while waiting at outstations-most have been there for awhile and have no intention of leaving.

As an overall percentage of total feed for FedEx, how much do you think is carried on their own feeders versus a dump like Ameriflight? I guarantee you the percentage is miniscule.

Do Empire pilots bid on bases like most airlines? On their career page it looked like they were hiring ATR FOs for ANC, HNL, and everywhere in between. I thought a persons could have a bit of fun with that.

I don't think so. I think you are hired into a base and should plan to stay there.

To any current or former FedEx Pilots: Does FedEx give any preferential hiring/ interview priorities to pilots currently employed with feeder companies e.g. Mountain Air Cargo, Empire Airlines? Thanks in advance for the
replies.
No. But as long as you fly something with "FedEx" painted on the outside of the fuselage, you won't have to schlep boxes... so you got that going for you... which is nice. Can't speak to gaining total consciousness.

You can move to any base you want if there is an opening.

I've heard UPS requires monthly bids for routes, no matter how great a job you've done- it can go to a competitor.
FedEx cancelled c208 flights if there was TS in the region.

I don't think it's monthly, but it is every so often.
