FedEx anti-missile system

FedEx jets might soon pack defensive weaponry. NBC News and Reuters report FedEx has asked the Federal Aviation Administration for permission to equip an upcoming fleet of Airbus A321-200 aircraft with an anti-missile laser system. The proposed hardware would disrupt the tracking on heat-seeking missiles by steering infrared laser energy toward the oncoming projectiles.

Why don’t we equip all commercial flights too? Maybe a system that will take out drones.

Heat seeking is so 1970s. No reason a modern camera and processing package couldn't track and guide visually.

Even more important is, none of these systems work straight and level. So are they going to start yankin' and bankin' in their 76? And we wont even mention how not effective this system is during the approach phase. Low, slow, and out of options.

Besides the last airline shot down, was by a radar guided missile.
I was referring to this one. Has there been one since 2014?
Yes, some dorklebrain Iranians moved their SAM site earlier that day and forgot to update the direction they were pointing. So after Trump assassinated Qassem Soleimani while a guest of the Iraq government, and Iran retaliated against a US military base, the missile crew mis-interpreted Ukrainian International Airlines Flight 752, a 737NG, as traffic coming from Iraq. They were using an SA-15 Gauntlet, which is radar-guided.

DHL was IR.

had a front row seat watching those guys get hit and then recover to landing, even with the loss of control on rollout. Well done work. They’re just lucky that there wasn’t a second SA-7/14, or if there was, that they didn’t fire.

Even had they had EW countermeasures, the 15a and b, are damn tough to escape from….whether you’re an aircraft/helo or a missile. It’s not called a Gauntlet for nothing.

@Pilot Fighter just place the airline name below the insignia…..

RADAR guided missiles are used my state actors.
IR is available to small terrorist groups.

The system is to defend against the latter because that is the current threat.
It is also specifically designed for a large, unmaneuverable aircraft.
