Family Guy

kids just need to grow up and not be shielded so much. So what if they watch a non kids cartoon? I doubt they would understand half of the jokes any whey.

It's not about "understanding the jokes", to me it's about repeating the things they hear in an inappropriate setting. Let's say your kids hear a joke they "don't get", and repeat it LOUDLY at a wedding or at school? It's about them learning what's appropriate to say, and when. Don't let little kids hear anything you don't want repeated at ANY time... When they're old enough to censor what they say appropriate to their surroundings and audiences, is when it's okay to significantly increase what they hear.

We had something like that happen once. My daughter heard a joke and did not realize it was inappropriate so she posted it on her Facebook page. Fortunately my wife checks her Facebook page from time to time and caught it. When we explained to our daughter what she wrote she was mortified.

It's not that she wouldn't let me or anything like that...but let's just say a happy wife = happy life.

Never understood that. I'm supposed to sacrifice my happiness because my wife is unreasonable? Not gonna happen. Good for you that you can make that happen, I can't.

It's not unreasonable...there are things that aren't worth causing a commotion...I do quite a lot of crap that makes her roll her eyes...for me it's a question of, "Is this worth my energy to get her upset over, or do I really care?"

Ultimately it comes down to the fact that we love each other in spite of stupid things like this and are a total team when it comes to the important stuff in life.

You're right, there are things not worth causing a commotion, like her causing one because you watch a mature cartoon. If you watch it in front of kids that's one thing, but you wanting to watch it by yourself is another.

Oh well, seems to work for you!

I watch Archer...offensive as hell...I choose not to watch family guy anymore because my wife is a special needs teacher / ministry coordinator. I feel Family Guy tends to center a lot of their jokes (most of which are hilarious) on the special needs population...not necessarily as funny.

How old are you? Just curious...Nickelodeon wasn't around when I was a kid, and I remember the beginning of cable TV...

I was thinking the same thing! Nickelodeon when I was a kid?? Hell, there was no cable when I was a kid!

I still remember the start of MTV and watching the first music video.

Holy Crap I'm old!

Yeah Nickelodeon didn't come about til I was in high school, and I remember it was a BIG deal to be able to get cable TV in our small little town. The cable didn't hook up directly to the TV however, it had to go through an old fashioned cable box with a DIAL (and we got a whopping 32 channels!) :) So to turn the channel meant getting up and actually going over to the TV... hell, we didn't even get a TV with a remote until I was 15!

What's funny is that we cancelled our cable TV almost a year ago now, and with a set-top bunny ear antenna we get almost 30 channels OTA here. When I was a kid, we got ABC, PBS, CBS and NBC as OTA signals. That was it. 4 channels. I think I was 12 or 13 when we got our first VCR, and that was a HUGE deal! OMG we can RECORD something and watch it over and over! We can press 'pause'! THIS IS AWESOME!! :D

Now, we have a Mac Mini hooked up to the TV, with wifi for instant internet access to pretty much anything. 450 movies stored in iTunes... at least 200+ more on DVD and blu-ray. It is really amazing how much has changed in home entertainment in just 30 years.

It's all about compromise. Odds are you are not going to marry a person with your exact same interests. You need to pick your battles. If hockey or baseball isnt on or it is a boring game, I'll happily let her watch what she wants, knowing in the near future I am going to want to watch sports and she may not be interested, but she will be cool with me watching for hours.

Is it worth it to give up a loving wife and family in favor of being able to always do what you want when you want? I'd say no, but I guess some would disagree.

Much better then I could have said.

Life is much easier and more enjoyable when you don't have to worry about what's going to bother someone else in your own home.
Hey man, whatever works for you! I tried living solo for a month or so (between moving out from living with roommates and getting married) and I just about lost my mind with boredom. Of course I had 3 siblings growing up and had never lived solo before that stretch so I guess it's all in what you're used to.

See, now that is a great reason versus me just thinking she doesn't like it. Of course, you don't HAVE to justify anything to me.

Compromise is correct, I was assuming he wanted to watch FG and she wouldn't compromise. I let her watch what she wants all the time since there is almost nothing but crap on anyway. I do agree with your post, in general, anyway but it's important to realize happiness goes both ways. Happy wife, happy life is something whipped guys say. There is no reason the man shouldn't be happy as well, which leads us back to compromise :)

PS - Hell yes on Archer! I will watch it when she goes to bed, not because she finds it offensive but because she doens't find it funny.

But someone on the internet doesn't agree with me!!!!!1one!111

I've found Archer is real hit or miss sometimes with who will like it. I think it's ridiculously smart for a "cartoon." If I could live my live with a little more Archer flair and not get arrested, it'd be a better world.

Matt13C articulated what I meant much better than I...sometimes I don'ts talks goods.

My dad took me to see American pie when I was 8 and I didn't turn out too bad...
