Re: Plane Crash in Provo, Utah

I would love to see this.

I never met Ben, but loved reading his posts.
It's funny, even though we never met, I still have that uneasy feeling as if he was a close friend.

RIP bud, may there be plenty of fishing and fresh pie up there!

I agree with everything you said.

RIP Ben.

Re: Plane Crash in Provo, Utah

wow, that's the second guy I know to go down, but I didn't know him personally, feels odd none the less. Makes you appreciate the important things in life and forget all the pity stuff. RIP

Well this is the first instance for me of someone that I 'knew' from aviation that died flying. I'd always hoped I'd not experience what all the more experienced aviators always write in regards to that, but for myself and many of us on this site, we can now unfortunately think of someone.

I recall meeting him very briefly at NJC '07 -- "hey, you're the one with the fishing pole in your mouth holdin' up the fish then, right?!" Nice guy.

That chat for a few minutes two years ago, and his posts on here, are the only way I knew him.

That said, though I'm certainly not the person to know how to do the sort of thing, should someone who does know how to arrange it, I'll be sure to contribute a little from my next paycheck to help out his family in such a tough time.

Quite an unfortunate event. :(

Re: Plane Crash in Provo, Utah

Sorry to hear it. I'll miss his insights and sense of humor on this board.
It's hard to tell just from some aerial pictures, but it really appears from them as if he did everything right. He made it to the road. There are skid marks, so it appears he had some forward speed. Left the gear up so the airplane did not flip. No post-crash fire but report of fuel spill so probably had fuel on board. Not all that much visible damage for a forced landing. Heck, from what I can see he did a good job and should have walked away. I'm befuddled. I've seen far worse crashes where the pilot(s) survived.

Re: Plane Crash in Provo, Utah

I hate this side of the coin. Ben will be missed in many places, including here. Support goes out to his surviving family members.

Re: Plane Crash in Provo, Utah

Man, just unbelieveable.

Seeing that picture with his new born. . .makes my heart hurt and my brain want to explode.

RIP man, you'll be missed.

Re: Plane Crash in Provo, Utah

Damn... I'm in the same boat as a lot of people here in that I never met him, but it's still very sobering to know that we lost a member of the community we've got here. :(

Re: Plane Crash in Provo, Utah

I also never met him in person, but I am sick to my stomach right now...

Aviation is wonderful, except on days like today when it is heartbreaking.

Part of what makes JC great is the bond we all feel to one another - even the ones we bicker with. The flip side to that coin is that there is a tangible sense of loss when something like this happens.

Re: Plane Crash in Provo, Utah

Damn it. Damn it, damn it, damn it. :(

Ben was a good dude, no question. What a huge loss for his family, the SLC JC crew and the JC community at large; I can't remember another loss of an active forum member in the 8 years I've been on here. Anybody?

Being on CFI wages, I'm sure his wife and kids will be hurting financially, so the idea of putting together a fund would be a huge help to them.

SLC JC'ers, let's look at getting together for his funeral.
