Failing School

i am happy passing all my grades after i had an ear operation(due to some ear infection). Before the operation i was failing and now im passing but i need better marks to get into aviation engineering, then become a Commercial airlines pilot

. I am doing well in math, but is sciecne a subject you must do good in?? thx

Don't even get me started on science

My question----> Is science a subject we must do good in high school

Yes. In the sense that you should do good in all your classes to keep your GPA up.

Rocket science is not necessary, but a basic understanding of physics will help when you're learning about the fundamentals of flight.

If you want to compete for an Air National Guard slot, Brian, you'd better learn to love science!

[/ QUOTE ]for an engineering degree? heck yea! both math and science are important if you want an engineering degree! You'll be taking calculus I, II & III, differential equations I & II, physics I & II, Chemistry I & II, organic chemistry etc etc... all those are math and science college courses.

[/ QUOTE ]what doncha like about Biology? just the disecting? that's such a small portion of the class!! I think biology is a major interesting subject (how things work, how they're connected to make them work).. thinking about how blood flows thru your system going from one end to the other on a consistent basis is fascinating really!! ask yourself (or your teacher), how is it that skin tissue can heal itself.. that's biology man! much better than organic chemistry, by far!! haha

speaking of disection.. what all do you have to disect in HS now a days? we did a worm & frog.. now that we have purell, use that afterwards! the teacher did a small pig, but wouldnt let us all do one. We had some interesting experiments apart from the disection portion of class!

Incidently....highschool biology and chemistry are hella easier then there college equivilent courses. And I went to an A++ magnet school. Just a heads up there "young guns."

We didn't get to dissect anything yet. I really see no use for biology. When will I have to know about choromosomes and etc while flying or any other job I would do? I'm not going to be a doctor or a biologist. I just don't like the subject. I really don't know why.

I am re-considering an engineering degree. BLS.gov makes the career sound so glorious. I decided to check their info on airline pilots and I would say the info is outdated to the 60s or something (pay scales and etc). So I'm not trusting them on the engineering stuff either. I wish there was a JC kind of website for engineering. I read that most of them work long hours in an office. That doesn't nescessarily attract me much. I also read that jobs are very scarce for undegraduates, which means I would need a masters to get a decent job.

What kind of degree would I need to work for an aircraft company taking orders for aircraft from the airlines? I know have no idea what degree I want (again).

High school isn't training you for a specific job. It's teaching you to be an informed adult. Those are things that you need to know in order to be a functioning, informed adult in our world.

I don't need Dylan Thomas to fly airplanes either, but I'm glad that I read him!

Hey Brian..

I was Business / Marketing but took a few Anatomy & Phys / Bio courses from the med track during undergrad in college... I think even though many of us may hate Bio or Chem in HS eventually when our transcripts from HS / College hit employers later on it'll show we're able to succeed in diverse areas and are well rounded in terms of our interests etc... .. if that makes sense !!

I know your aiming for a Pilot slot someday but this past weekend I ran into a kid pursuing a Mech. Engineering degree with the hopes of getting into aerospace tech. with the A.F... I think he was AFROTC... so who knows.. with your mech. engineering background maybe the view up front as a test pilot someday wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility ??

Lloyd, you're doing it all wrong.

Brian, the reason you gotta get into those classes?

Chicks dig it.

Yeah, I've heard that. Gracias for the heads up though!

However, both parents said that bio and chem were wayy easier the second time around...wierd?

Its not that I'm doing poorly in chem, I just dont find it to be the most interesting.

Back on topic: 747, does your school transcripts go by each 9 weeks grades, or do they average them out for a total semester grade? For example, if you got an 88 % in math the 1st quarter, then a 93% in the 2nd quarter, you would have an A for the 1st semester. Is that how your school does it? If so, those F's can surely come up to C's with hard work!

I did okay in high school. Had a "B" average or just under (we'll call it a "B--" average.

). Never failed a class.

However, I carried over my study-habits (which were zip) into college and promptly failed Principals of Accounting, French and Freshman English (mainly because I didn't show up OR study).

After almost getting tossed from a Community College (and not a good one at the time either... more like "13th grade" ), I took some time off to sew some wild oats, then got my poop together, went back, re-took everything (except Accounting) and aced `em, and transferred to a "real" college.

(Accounting is to this day, the only "F" that remains on my record - and it can stay there!

).

Graduated college with a whoppin' 2.75 GPA.

To borrow a line from the Otto:

"Now look at me.....I DRIIIIVE the bus!!"

Dunno that that helped any... probably didn't, but... there it is.

[/ QUOTE ]Engineering an attractive career? maybe, depends on what your into... I only know about civil/environmental engineering.. so i can't talk about mechanical, industrial, computer or aerospace...

but yea, for civil/environmental.. if you want to succeed and move up the ladder.. you'll be working some LONG hours, even weekends...but when you think about it.. a lot of jobs are that way! doctors work 36 hrs straight and need certifications..pilots work long hours and are gone from home a lot... engineers can work 60 hrs a week + and also need certifications...

it's all based on what you want to do with your life... don't let others dictate by telling you what they *think* you should do or would be good at! that's what my mistake was...

what are some of the things you like/enjoy and go based off of that...

if your looking for high $$ (as compared to *pilot*).. don't give engineering a second thought.. it'll be like working as CEO.. get high $$, but you'll work 80 hrs a week, never eat at home, never see your family etc etc...engineering in most cases does not lead up to high $$ no matter what anyone says!I'd say $50-80K would be the range as a professional engineer (PE) and that's after getting your FE licensure, 4 years of experience in the field, another 8 hr exam and many many long hours...

also - when looking for a field to go into.. look to the fields that can't be replaced by computers!
