Failing School

Here's the thing, kid. You're old enough to know that you shouldn't be failing anything in high school, let alone 3 classes. To answer your question of whether or not it's going to hurt you getting an airline job: yes, it most certainly will; because the habits you make now will stick with you. Failing 3 classes shows you really don't care about school--you don't have your priorities straight. I wouldn't want some slacker in command of a $140 Million dollar jet, with 300 passengers behind. You need to straighten up and get your priorities in order. Lucky for you, you're only in 9th grade, and most colleges don't look at 9th grade (unless you fail everything--which seems to be what you're doing). The pilots that command those planes earned it, and they did it with hard work and focus.

Remember that not just anyone is going to get that airline job. You have to separate yourself from a pretty big pool of other prospectives, who most likely have performed well in highschool, and gone onto college to perform well. You should be eager to peform well and shine in high school, with that goal of being an airline pilot in mind. That way, when you make it, you can look back and say you worked hard for it, and have something to fall back on.

Start doing well right now. If it requires going to summer school to make up 3 failed classes, then I don't see what's stopping you. At least it'd show that you're mature enough to know you've screwed up and you're going to fix it. You have to have a positive/succeeding attitude now, or else you're going to be a slacker for years to come. I hope you get straight A's next semester and the remainder of your college years. Do that, and you've proved to yourself that you're a sharp kid and capable of succeeding.

Good luck,
Aero

All good points so far...

On other little note that I'd like to throw in to the mix is that sometimes there can be physical or chemical things at work that effect learning. My wife works with toddlers with learning disabilities and I must say that I am absolutely amazed at what is being learned every year about how the mind works and how people learn in startingly different ways. There are very cool stories about people that are very smart but do very poorly until the right set of circumstances are in place to allow them to learn to their potential.

Keep this in mind when thinking about why you are in the situation that you are in. It may very well be that you just need to apply yourself and realizing that your future depends on it may be enough to get you to do it. Or it may require the help of a professional to decipher the best way to help you learn and make the most of your potential.

I am impressed that you are asking the questions that you are. Very good!

Now go to work figuring out why and how to turn things around. I know that you can do it.

Yep fond memories...!!! All my P.E. class in both JR. high and highschool were rather larges classes anywhere from 30-50 guys.
You had to dress out like I mentioned last post if you were in periods 1-5. I always made sure I was in 1-5

But being serious for a moment I failed P.E. my first semester cause I didn't wanna dress out and shower and my mom had to kick my ass in to high gear and say get over it. So "WannaBePilot" if that is what is stressin you bout P.E. I can understand having others see you like that can be embarassing initially.
But don't let it bring down your GPA and keep you out of getting into the University you want to attend.

I really want to thank all of use. The classes I failed were Math, global studies, and living envoirment. In the begining of the school year I was good, but I found the wrong friends and just became one of them. Now Im doing a little better. I Thank All of use, I took that advice and now Im doing better.

I'm a Junior in High School. From my experience thus far, people tend to fail a class or get a 'D' in High School. But you must stay focused and think, What do I want to do in life? Where do I want to be? And what do I want to be making?

May I also point out, it's who you hang out with in school sometimes. Stay away from certain crowds, they can lead to trouble. I also know it's hard but, try and sit away from people that you might be distracted by in the classroom. It all effects your grade. Best of luck to you. Just study hard and you'll do fine.

English isn't looking too good either bro!

Here is my take. High school is generally a waste of time for the student that is bright and gets As and Bs because they could probably figure out a better and more effective way of learning the same information long-term and enjoy it more at the same time.

Do your best in the rest of high school and if you don't get anything else out of it, then use it as a platform to prove to others (peers, family, and future employers) that you can succeed at something that you try to succeed in.

Between travel, varsity hockey, and lacrosse, I guess I think I'm doing OK and slack off in gym..at least I haven't skipped yet!

[/ QUOTE ]Math? your definately going to want to do better in math!!! you'll need it for college!

and I'd definately stress on doing MUCH better up until your out of high school... cuz you can go to just about ANY college you want if you have the grades to do so (that's where scholarships come in).. without those high grades, you'll be, in a sense, held down to only the colleges that *accept* you (you won't have a choice as to whether you *accept* them)!

most people may find high school to be kind of a joke since you can still get into some type of college by just getting C's...After learning my own hard lesson, I kind of see high school as going one of two ways: the beginning of something great or the beginning of the end.. it's either the beginning of making you into a success story or it's the end unto which you find yourself going into a career you really don't want to do....

you make it what you want, nobody else can do that work for you... but if there's somewhere you want to go, someone you want to be and a particular career you want to do.. then you'd best get yourself up and performing or you won't be doing and being "all that you want to be"...pilots use math everyday to compute fuel etc.. they use science to understand how planes can fly.. it's best to understand this stuff early on and if you don't -> ask your teacher.. ask your parents.. ask the student in the row next to you...get a tutor..do whatchagottado!

Prime example: Me.. i wanted to be a veterinarian, I visited the school I wanted to attend.. worked in my dogs animal hospital for 2 summers...I had the motivation, except in school - I got C's and couldn't get any scholarships to help pay for vet school...by then, it was too late to fix my mistakes and my parents wouldn't help pay for vet school (8 yrs of school, too long)...so my dad talked me into going into engineering (which is what he does).. now, i got my engineering degree and am working in the field - but i don't particularily like it (it's boring/mundane/same ol everyday).. i'd much rather work with animals.. only working at the humane society or whatever (besides vet) doesn't pay.. so i only WISH i had done better in high school.. it would have offered me the luxury of doing whatever i wanted to do without having to worry about the financial cost, scholarships would have paid for most had i HAD the grades... it's just too late for me to go back and do it now but those are the consequences of 1) my not studying hard enuff, 2) nobody *telling* me to get high grades and 3) nobody pushing me to get the grades i needed (not even my counselor helped me). All everyone ever told me was "just get thru high school, don't drop out".

Funny thing is, my counselor kept trying to tell me i was going to be a farmers wife and that I didn't need good grades for that...NICE huh?! hahaha
crazy.gif

oh - btw - just keep telling yourself that it's ok to be a geek and to work your butt off..don't take high school too personally when it comes to being in certain cliches or name calling or what not...you have to remind yourself that your doing what your doing for a reason and 20 years down the road, those kids won't even remember your name (except when you meet up at the 20 yr high school reunion with a beauty of a wife on your arm, college degree & stories of flying & traveling around the world)... truth be known, what your parents tell you is true -> you only keep in touch with 1 or 2 (at the most) friends from high school. all the rest, you'll lose touch with!! same goes for college...I didn't think that'd happen either, but it did...

I had teachers in school suggesting I spend more time in woodshop and 'work experience' rather than AP English and physics. I still can't figure out if they were trying to protect me from potential rejection or actually trying to hold me back so I didn't worry so much about it and chugged away.

I even had to do 'self-study' algebra in junior high school because for some strange reason, even though I was involved in G.A.T.E., there wasn't any more space in the class (Mad props to Mr. Hamid at Cherry Avenue JR High School who helped me self-study).

Hit the books hard. Hit 'em as hard as you can because there's always going to be obstacles in your way whatever you want to do.

I didn't know they had G.A.T.E outside of AZ. I have asked people form other states if they had heard of G.A.T.E they look at me wierd.
There schools had other names for there gifted programs it seems.

LOL! I'd have been offended!!!!

Incidently Kristie isn't engineeering a more complex field of study then Veterinarian Science?

Lastly kid you can do....in highschool my teachers kept telling me that I should give up my dream of being a pilot cause I have a slight analytical dslexia.
They told me to stick to my strengths like my abilty to communicate well and relate to people and solve problems and suggested that I follow my mom career choice of being a psychologist.
I never gave up my mom wouldn't let me and I worked my butt off and passed Trig and Calculus. I'm not bad at math I just don't pick it up as fast as others and I learn better visually in comparison to being able to always see it in my head.
Oh it was an up hill battle...lots of tutors, lots of late nights and studying while my friends were out at parties but I feel in the end as Kristie said I'll be the better one out because of it.

Kristie, much like flying the public has a very different perception of what a vet does. I am seeing a girl who is a vet, and although she saves horses everyday, has quite a few exciting cases where she really uses her knowledge and skill there is the side of the career many do not see/realise. The driving from barn to barn, the daily emergency calls for horses who have cut themselves, and requires little more then a cleaning, and maybe 1 stitch (if she gets out her scapal), colic at all hours of the day, being bombarded by women with 'just a quick question' which they do not want to pay for, etc. She is on call the entire weekend, which means being at every horses beck and call and having no time to hang out. Most people do not realise the average vet earns $100,000 less then the average MD, and I personally think they probably are smarter. This girls does not work just with horses, but cows, and small animals. Think of the variation is systems, deseases, symptoms, drugs, drug amounts, temperatures, behaviour, manners, etc they have to be familiar with. It is an awesome amount of information.

Oh I know Iain.. Vet school is just like Med school...but i still would have preferred it.. i just made some bad choices in the beginning like not getting the grades i should have been getting.. it's all my own fault, I really can't blame anyone else for that. When I make my first million (working on it now! haha), I'll go work down at the animal shelter or open up a boarding hotel or something! hahahahha

I think Vet school is just as difficult as engineering. they're just different in application!

Initially it was called "M.G.M." while I was in elementary, but I think it became "G.A.T.E." around sixth grade or so. Lots of fun! Became a pro at "WUMPUS" on the P.E.T. computer!

Everyone says that good grades can get you scholarships, and they are telling you the truth. I was recently awarded $2000 a semester at CMSU for getting a 28 on the ACT and earning a 3.67 GPA. They are also talking about college and things that probably seem distant to you, so set your sights a little closer and start out by focusing on something small like getting a good grade on the next test and then use that success to motivate you. This has dug me out of many deep holes as far as grades go. I have gotten D's up to A's before, so it is definately possible! Good Luck!
