FAA "sitting in on checkride"

"He doesn't know it yet, but he already flunked."

- Actual quote from an FAA inspector about to do an initial CFI checkride to corporate pilot in the FBO lounge area, sipping his coffee gazing through the blinds at the ramp as the applicant tied down the airplane he just flew in for the checkride at PNE.

I'm not making this stuff up.

If that is true, I have something to say, but since this is a public forum, I'm gonna keep my mouth shut....

I'd decline..

Most Feds I know are really cool guys, I'm just leery of the guy who can say "Welp, I'm gonna be needing that ticket now."

There was a kid who busted some ride, with a backseat fed, while I was at ATP for spilling oil into the cowling while adding oil.. He had to come back the next day pay $350 (or whatever it was) and put oil in a plane, without spilling..

I remember bits and pieces of a friend of mines student busting over something horribly stupid with a fed observer, but I can't remember what it was..

Then of course there was the guy who everyone knew was going to bust harder than anyone ever had, with just an examiner, let alone a fed, who passed with flying colors with a fed in the back.

Ah yes, the $350 checkride. As well as another $350 for the re-check. Bill Lumley used to love to get guys that way on a technicality. I hope he's not there anymore.

I've never failed an FAA checkride (including initial CFI w/ a fed), BUT there's at least one checkride I would have failed for sure had a fed been onboard because it would have been a pretty clean kill. To this day (12 years later), I'm not sure why I passed that one.

(continuing)

FSDO backseater "Fail him, or I fail you!"

:)
I was just wondering if I had missed something as I thought the examiner was 'pose to say "this is a failure or unsat", and let the student know on the spot. I have never failed one, but on any ride I've taken, I've made errors. I was thinking that the DPE failed him, and later said, the devil, errr, FED made him do it. (IE he failed him so he wouldn't be failed).

Happened to me on my PPL of all things. Luckily, I was flying a C150 for the ride, so it was limited to observing some of the oral exam and my preflight. He asked me a few questions beyond what the DPE did (mainly asking my why I was checking certain things on the preflight) but that was about it.

Because someone saw the combined effort and realized everyone oops's from time to time..

None of us have ever taken a checkride we couldn't have failed at some point during the ride..

I had the opportunity to have a Federale on the third seat of the Seminole for my commercial-multi checkride at LGB. The DPE picked someone else, to have the ride-along with, though, before things could get serious about it.

I'm from the FAA, and I'm here to help.

"Sir, this isn't my airplane, you'll have to ask the owner about that."

Like any other group of folks, Feds run the gamut from excellent to lousy, with the majority somewhere in the middle.

Yup. Mine was power-off-180 related, and the examiner said something like, "You clearly know how to perform the maneuver, this airport is too bloody busy to get a proper 180, and you're not coming up short of the runway, now let's get out of here and do lazy eights!"

Pretty cool guy.

Had the checkride today with the fed taking up a seat in the seminole.. Everything went well and I passed so im happy.. I think it overall was just a longer checkride because with the fed there we touched on everything in the oral and the flight witch was good. Overall two hrs of ground, 1.8 in the air.. but at the end of it the fed complemented me on my flying and I told him it was nice meeting him..He then said if ya ever need anything to give a call and most likely he wont help and gave me a wink...:) I thought that was very funny and true at the same time.. Now the task of finding some Multi students ahhhhh.. Hope everyone is doing good, thanks for all the input on this thread
