FAA releases ECi cylinder (IO-520/550) AD

There was a 206 I used to fly with a TIO-540 in it, something like 40" for take off and 36" for cruise climb.... That seemed like a time bomb. 1550 degree turbo temps while climb in around 100-120KIAS. Just didn't seem like enough cooling.

Sent from my StarTac using Etch A Sketch.
Mighty 'Jo...43" takeoff, 38" cruise climb...with those translucent orange exhaust risers right out your window.

Got SAP Investment cast cylinders on my 550, which have better reliability than CMI, but the AD makes me replace them if they come off the engine for any reason. Grrrrr.

Valves/guides seem to be the big bugaboo for large bore Conts. Some people have their new cylinders' guides/valves lapped and that seems to help long term issues.

I've got an io520K (2850rpm for up to 5 minutes) with chrome jugs. I fly it like I stole it last 11-1/2 years.
  • I always cruise climb at 105 knots IAS or higher, can't see over the nose otherwise.
  • I didn't buy an airplane to go slow so I NEVER run lean of peak.
  • I'm old school and don't over square the engine.
  • I added a oil filter, io520's don't come with one.
  • Change the oil every 25 hours, always use Cam Guard.
A little over 1,400 hours on the engine with good compression and I've never touched a cylinder.
