FAA examiner predesignation knowledge test

I was just talking to my local FSDO and they said basically the same thing. Under the new setup they have, they are so undermanned that they aren’t even sure how they will oversee their current DPEs much less add any new ones. That a long with the decline in checkrides unless you are in a FSDO that has a lot of foreigners training equals less demand. I know the examiners in my FSDO are fighting hard to block any new DPE from being appointed even as a few leave because they want to pick up the slack and put that cash in their pockets. Even to the detriment of the schools having to wait weeks sometimes for checkride

How the hell are feds making extra for doing a check ride?

I was referring to the current crop of DPEs. They don’t want to see new DPEs as the current group drops off. The DPEs in my area are mostly an older group. They claim they can pick up the slack as current DPEs stop doing checkrides to boost their yearly numbers.

DPE's in socal charge either or almost a grand now. Usually takes less then 6 hours and you don't have to put on a uniform. They also are turning away work they are so busy. And yes, you can even do 2 in a day. Worth it.

You do three in a day if one is a retest.

We used a guy that would do 2 a day if it was the same ride. Ie: PPL, but a few years ago that put a stop to that.

They still do two a day here regularly. The guy who does our glider clubs rides will only come to our airport if there two rides to do that day since he is traveling from another FSDO area to do that ride since we don’t have a glider DPE in our FSDO.

Being a DPE is the best racket going. If you're in a popular flight training area (SOCAL, FL, TX) you can easily earn $150 - $200k in cash without wearing a uniform. Last I heard it was $500 for a private, $600 for instrument & commercial, $750 for CFI & $1,000 for ATP rides.

It took a mid-air collision for this DPE to retire. The step under the baggage door of the arrow made contact with the main rotor disc of the Robinson.

Honestly, If I had a flight school, I would move it out to some uncontrolled field in the middle of nowhere, with MAYBE a quiet approach control facility somewhere within reasonable distance. Hopefully we'd be the only thing on the field.

I don't see the attraction to Florida. Hot as hades most of the time, nothing but congestion and hassle and TRWs and bumpy skies 8 months of the year. I'd rather take a few IFR days and be somewhere quiet and more temperate.
