ExpressJet Baby Removal Update (well, kinda)

Listen up peeps. You cannot control a 19 month old child!!!! They are not 11,they are not even two yet. A 19 month old goes off of instinct and natural reactions. If they're hot, tired, wet, cold, whatever...they can do any number of reactions, including crying. A 19 month old doesn't have the capability to understand why he should be quiet or not to cry. They're out of their element, usually off of their sleep/eating schedule, and around strange people and noisy machines. Of course they are gonna cry. Deal with it.

that is one funny smiley

you can't do that when you don't know who the daddy is!

All I gotta say is:

"WOO MA BABY DADDY IS?"

:)

The only reason I'm cracking a joke is that there's an equal and opposite thread going on at jetgirls.net!

I think it's wrong to condemn either side in this issue, because it is pretty clear to me that the media is twisting the story to their benefit. Face it, the airlines are a huge scapegoat right now, and it is popular in the media to make us look like the bad guy. This story is a great way to do it.

Problem is, the general public will never know the real story, and you'd find the real story to be nothing like this Mother is describing.

When I read the above it reminded me of the Clinton/Lewinski crap.

Ya really think this is pure airline bashing? Paaaleeeze! :)

Then maybe a 19 month child should not be on an airplane?

Then maybe a 19 month child should not be on an airplane?

Maybe people who can't ignore a little fussing shouldn't be on an airplane either ;) If you want the guarantee of a child-free flight, charter one. You have that option.

Again, I'll use my example of a military family stationed overseas. How are they supposed to get back to the states not on an airplane? International "trips" often involve domestic flight sequences. No one goes direct from London to Madison, Wisconsin.

How about family emergencies?

I don't fly with my kids. I haven't had a reason or need to. If I did have a reason or need to, I would. I think it's incredibly arrogant to say a 19 month old doesn't "belong on an airplane".

My comment was in response to somebody that said you can not control a 19 month old child, so, yes, if you can not control your child, then maybe out of respect for the passengers & the Flight Crew, it would be a good idea to fly when you are able to control your child.

I hope that you did not take my comment as a blanket statement that no children should be allowed on aircraft?

Then maybe a 19 month child should not be on an airplane?

Whatever. All the baby bashers were all perfect as kids, and now that they have grown up they have turned into elitist snobs. Hope you don't fall off that high horse and hurt yourself.

I did. Because you said "Then maybe a 19 month old child should not be on an airplane."

That tells me you think a 19 month old shouldn't be on an airplane.

He was talking about a 19 month old crying. Yes, they do that. However, a 19 month old can be crying and still be "controlled" to the extent that they are by no means a danger to the safety of flight. A crying 19 month old can be strapped in their carseat.

I've had lots of crying babies/tots on my planes. Never once was any of them EVER a danger to the safe operation of our flight. An annoyance? A few times, sure. But never, ever a threat to safety. The only time I ever had to threaten removal was when that one kid's parents wouldn't buckle her in. With calm explanation & discussion with the parents, the problem was resolved :)

Let's see, my Aunt has 3 kids, 2 boys & a girl. The boys when they were younger were very hyper, out of respect to others, she would not take them on airplane trips or go out to restaurants. She knew if the boys sat more than 10 minutes they would be running around the tables.

Friend of the family goes on trips quite often, she plans trips around the baby's sleep/nap cycle, works out great as the baby sleeps the whole time.

As for me, I went on my first airplane trip when I was about 6 years old, that is when my parents felt that I was mature enough to handle the trip, any younger & I would have been running up & down the aisles.

If you feel that I am snobbish for thinking that parents should be responsible for the actions of their children, then a snob I am.

Yes, I do understand that things happen & kids get cranky, but if you can not control your child for the entire flight between JFK-LAX, maybe it would be a good idea to wait until the child can handle the flight.

I guarantee you I was not on an airplane at too early an age throwing fits. I was also not out of control. If the baby isn't old enough to control, don't bring them on an airplane.

I understand there are some circumstances where it's going to be required to fly with a baby. Having said this, this isn't the norm nowadays. People feel they can do whatever they want with babies. Get a babysitter. Don't bring your kid into the movies, to dinner, etc. And, if possible, don't bring them on an airplane.

Just my elitist attitude...

That is not what was said, Amber, here is what was said:

I take that to mean the child is going to be crying, kicking, running, stomping, yelling, & not wearing that good ole seatbelt.

Listen up peeps. You cannot control a 19 month old child!!!! Deal with it.

Which is why my solution is perfect.

Duct tape.

Cheap, simple, easy, and everyone's happy. The kid's not going to get anymore pissed off, either, and he won't remember being duct taped when he grows up.

Problem solved!

I take that to mean the child is going to be crying, kicking, running, stomping, yelling, & not wearing that good ole seatbelt.

We read it differently then. If a kid is behaving that way, and is a threat to the safety of flight and or not able to comply with federal law, then the Contract of Carriage provides for them to be removed.

Like I said though, in 7 years I never actually had to remove any kid. Others may find them annoying. I find lots of people annoying, smelly people who fart, armrest hogs, overhead bin hogs, elitist snobs, etc. But they're a part of society too, and unless they're doing something to jeprodize the safety of the flight, or are in violation of the Contract of Carriage, I have to deal with it :)

I would never take my kids to a Ruth's Chris, Morton's, or other "nice" restaurant. Those aren't "kid"places. I will, however, every now and then, take them to O'Charley's, Applebees, and places like that. That's part of how they learn what is acceptable public behavior and what is not. Should they act up at any time while we're there, or any other public place for that matter, they are removed and dealt with age-appropriatly.

If you go to a "kid" movie, expect there to be kids there. It is, after all, a KID movie. (Cars, Monster's Inc, etc) I will not take my kids to a non-kid movie. (Casino Royale, Indiana Jones, etc) It's NOT for kids!

I'd rather sit next to a crying baby than some of the adults I've had to endure. I often enjoy the company of children over many adults because children haven't learned how to be phony and full of s*** yet.

Not only are the smelly drunks obnoxious, but what about the non-stop talkers, or on my return flights - the businessman who keeps dropping hints that he'd like me to give him a ride to his hotel in San Francisco after I pick up my car. I told the last one, "Did you see the pilot flying this plane? Sorry, but I'm taking him home!". (I wasn't, but it shut the dude up)

Oh, a HUGE :yeahthat:

When I'd commute in uniform, I'd take a screaming, fit-throwing tantruming monster over a lewd, chest-staring guy who'd try to pick me up the whole flight. Ugh.

(*) (*) I'm sorry, did you say something? By the way, what are you doing later.....I'll be at the Hilton! :hiya: :panic: :hiya:

j/k Amber

I agree with you that there are situations where it's necessary to travel with kids, and I'm completely OK with that, but I don't think that the majority of screaming kids on planes are travelling due to a lack of other options. I guess I just don't see how the convenience of one family should trump the convenience of a hundred other people.
