Delta Air Lines Inc. is "tapped out" and can't borrow any more money to cover its mounting losses, making deep pay and benefit cuts it is seeking from its pilots essential to its survival, the company's chief financial officer told an arbitration panel Tuesday.

According to the company, the average earnings of pilots last year who worked the full year was more than $157,000.

[own research]

Bastian served as Deltas Senior Vice President - Finance and Controller from 2000 to March 2005 and as Vice President and Controller from 1998 to 2000. Bastian was rehired as CFO in July 2005. Mr. Bastian will be paid an annual base salary of $450,000. In recognition of Mr. Bastian's repayment obligation to his former employer(whom he was employed by for 4 months!) a significant portion of his signing bonus from that employer, as well as Mr. Bastian's forfeiture of substantial additional compensation from and opportunities with his former employer, the Company will make a one-time cash payment to Mr. Bastian in the amount of $350,000. It is the Company's understanding that a substantial portion of this amount will be paid over by Mr. Bastian to his former employer in satisfaction of his repayment obligation described above.

Didn't someone mention there are 6000 Delta Employees in Management? Oh but we need to cut those "$157,000" salaries.

MSN has this same article posted today, and also posted another one a few days ago...both ending with the same mention of the average annual income of pilots' salaries, without any mention of the CFO or any other management salaries.

i'd love to see any one of those reporter peeps do a research article on those mgmt salaries in comparison to pilot salaries and see what cuts they could make with mgmt salaries in order to survive and then compare the cuts between mgmt and pilots - would be an interesting read i think!

I betcha anything, less people are affected along with a smaller cut vs what they're asking of pilots!

other than being really senior and obviously being high up on the yearly pay scale thingermabob, does the chief pilot get any $$$$ for his additional services?

Southwest management rocks my socks off!!!

They can kiss my black butt.

100,000,000 passengers/year and they want $300,000,000. Raise ticket fares by $3/pax, voila.

Unfortunately for them, most of the koolaiders have retired.

I read today where the CFO said he is losing sleep over wondering if the cuts are really aggressive enough. Give me a break. Typical Delta set a plan in action without having plan B and/or C. Never have the planned for worst case scenario. Its finally catching up to them and now they sound like whiney babies. If he thinks he has trouble sleeping think about the customer service agent that is barely making ends meet due to their screw ups. The company is losing many many talented folks due to the cuts. You cant just replace experience overnight.

Now that's funny!!

Well, one thing's for sure. The current CFO is making substantially less than the last. All very well publicized.

LOL. When they're down to just Doug then we'll know how the votes will turn out. (Definition of koolaiders: people who disagree with me.)

Leo and the gang initally got their's and got out. Gotta love the company statement a few months ago when asked about paying Leo and the gang. "We will not pay them and will not ask the court for any special consideration for the packages given" Now Delta wants to give them some of their money and take away from the rest, not just pilots. The non union will take another pay cut in the very near future.

S'OK. I had it essplained many times. It was funny how it always seemed that a TA would go down just based on the extra noise the angry guys generated. Then it would pass. But I expect that you are right and things will not end well.

But I hope I'm wrong.
