Ex-UAL pilot sues United for defamation

We do the same at light weights. I brief that I'll open the TRs, but use idle only. They're ready if need them, but I probably won't.

We took an empty 767 in ATL the morning after Christmas (well, pretty much, we had 4 empty cans on it, but essentially no weight). Our REF speed was 119. ATL was NOT happy with us!
Sounds like us with the empty 75’s when the PM forgets to tell ATC the Vref is 112kts.

I took an empty (well, two pilots and six FA's after a charter flight) 319 into Dallas-Love during Southwest "peak" and nooooooobody was happy.

Well that’s pretty damning.

United hired the first officer in February 2023. He had logged 3,001 flight hours, including 129h in 767s, and received “an unsatisfactory performance rating due to deficiencies with take-offs and aircraft control” during an April 2023 check ride.

Following a second check ride, the first officer received a “satisfactory performance rating” but a “minimum grade in three areas, one of which was landings”, the NTSB says. A check pilot also described the first officer as having had “struggles”.

As a result, the first officer had received a “short-cycle” designation, which required that he complete another evaluation in 90 days rather than in the typical nine months.

Have you been a Line Check Airman before?

You literally have no idea what your grading sheet looks like. Additionally, grading isn't always student-based, at some points during OE you're basically grading what the training department produced as well.

"Special Tracking" which sounds like the SouthernJets equivalent of what this pilot was on isn't that hard to get put on.

Also, why did I initially ban Chris Ford, since you apparently told him you knew. You've artfully dodged the checksum.

No CKA. But “takeoff” and “aircraft control” basically sounds like the most basic of our jobs. And never flown it, from what I hear the 757 / 767 is one of the most stable platform out there.

I don’t make excuses for pilots. Zero surprise a guy who scored as can’t control an airplane would then end up bending one. And what does it say about someone when they sue for defamation in this case?

As national agency standards IP, on checkrides I have with line pilots around the country, it’s as much eval’ing their performance, as it is eval’ing the agency IPs who taught them.

Yup. We grade twice, the first is during “first contact” and that is dropping on Flight Training’s desk. The second grading is the line check event at the end of OE.

If I felt defamed, I would sue for defamation. I’m not judging the merits of the case but it’s perfectly possible he had a case.

Speaking of case, why did I ban Chris Ford back in the day? :)
