ETOPS approval process

You know what dad pants are. Come on! Do you wear relaxed-fit jeans, polo shirt tucked in, beltless with white tennis shoes?

It's alright man! :)

I always wear a belt. Never knew I was a dad before I had kids! <must go drink quietly in the corner>

We got new "company" email addresses (because there was too much non essential stuff going to our old company email addresses. So instead of filtering what they were sending the pilots, they just gave us TWO email addresses we have to check, one with essential things like FOM updates and one for EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF EMAIL THE COMPANY SENDS OUT. The worst though is that somehow we are on the IT outage distribution list so every time they take a system off line (and they seem to do it all the time) we get an email. And then we get another email when they bring the system back on line. And then we get emails apologizing that we are getting all these emails and they are trying to figure out a way to stop them.
I have roughly 80 unread messages in the Company mail at any given time. Lots of useless information. My personal email is even worse, but stuff I care about is easy to separate from the "that's nice" pile.

Stuff from the CPO or from the base administrator gets read. Stuff from Technical Pubs or the various fleet management gets read. I don't care, though, that they've changed the DAY hotel, or that the pay value deadline (which happens on the same date and same time every month [and sometimes I still screw it up but that's another story]) is tomorrow morning at 0800 MT (or whenever it is).

Hi, Can some clarify this

If your airline is not ETOPS approved, does this mean you have to fly all routes within 60 minutes of a diversion airport?

And how long does ETOPS approval take to achieve?

thanks
I've flown for a couple companies now that have brought twins online after only having 3-4 engine jets. They were able to get "shortcuts" on the process by simulating ETOPS procedures before the twins even came online, but it's not an easy or quick process. I don't know how long it took from start to finish, but probably no less than a year (just a wild guess).

I've done an Atlantic crossing with an item that required us to go non-ETOPS (I don't recall what it was at this point), and yes, we had to stay within 60 minutes of a diversion airport. However, unlike ETOPS-approved airports under the applicable op spec, which are checked for suitability during dispatch, the 60 minute diversion airports don't have to be anything more than a piece of pavement that can handle the jet. In other words, there's no requirement to check closures, weather, CFR capability, etc. for non-ETOPS diverts of less than 60 minutes. While this certainly isn't a problem flying over civilized areas, it's a good idea for the crew to do a bit of checking themselves before launching over northern Canada or Greenland on a non-ETOPS "Blue Spruce" route.

Flew back from ACC once with a fire loop MCO'd. That was an ETOPS60 flight. Talk about painfully long.

Yeah, I recall now it was a fire loop issue for us, too. But, we weren't going as far south as ACC... That must have taken forever.

11:56. ACC to JFK. Went north, passing west of Lajes, then turned west and came down the Canadian Maritimes.

Roger, ditto.

Apparently this is just the personal device roll out. It's a Dell product but I'm not sure which one. They are currently installing a data bus in the widebody fleet that will integrate with the ship's EFBs... to be installed at a later date.

I'd imagine that would be the type of a P.A. announcement where it would behoove the PIC to think of just the right wording before giving some explanation of the circuitous route of flight.

"Flying time is planned at (___) at an altitude of (___)." :D

Absolutely! No need to give them any more info than flight time and arrival time. Why it takes so long is unimportant.
