A Embry Riddle CAPT student told me they are going to start and retro-actively log their back seat observer time and will be applying it to their total time column to beef up their total time hours. They were told this is unconventional but the industry would follow ERAU's lead.

What do you guys think of this?

I could not imagine going to an interview and having to explain logging 250 + hours of riding in the back seat.

Does this mean when I fly commercial, if I sit by the wing window and watch the phases of flight I can log that time.

If this is the case, then I will be logging lots of jet time.:)

Dont forget to log that as Multi Engine Observer time BRIAN !!!!! Thats more valuable than DA-40 back seat time.

Pretty soon we will be able to log time just by going to the airshows and looking at the aircraft. Some fighter time should look good on my resume.

I think there will be a lot of MD-80 Type-Rated ERAU grads who will be very disappointed come interview time at the regionals.

Well, that means I get to log time in 777s, 747s, 737s, 757s, MD80s, Saabs, and RJs in addition to my C172/152 time.

Woo hoo! Let me start sending out resumes.

You can log whatever you want. Justifying it to a prospective employer or FAA DE/Inspector is a different story.

I wouldn't recommend it.

And I know quite a few people who would be offended at the notion that the industry will follow lock step after ERAU's lead.

Cripes! I'd better get a bigger log book.

Just remember: winners never cheat and cheaters never win. I think I'll keep my old log book and play it straight.

Hey, good deal. I'm flying on a A320 this afternoon. I'll be in row three...which is pretty close to the cockpit, so I'm gonna go ahead and log it---I'll have the CA endorse my logbook when I deplane.

Doug, I know DL doesn't operate the route, but do you think there's anyway you'll be flying LAX-MSP this afternoon? I mean stranger things have happend. And by the way, when will DL be hiring again? With all this new jet experience I'll have logged, I should be ready to interview by November or so.

Dave is 100% correct.

You can log Big Wheel/Green Machine time, but if it pops up on an 8710 form or an employment application, you're toast.

someone once told me that if you have your ATP you can log time in the back seat. is this true? i also heard that cfi's can log that time as well.

Every once in a while I'll practice radio calls on the CB radio in my car (so very redneck, I know, but I love it!)... so I can log Ford Escort time, right?

thats about as credible as logging PIC time just because one is sole manipulator and the other is "safety pilot". too bad there are lots of loopholes in this in the regs to allow a lot of shady time logging.. TAB uses the same marketing ploy to their students to log "PIC" in the Beech 1900. Im sure that would look nice at an interview. Well gee golly sir I was sitting in the backseat of the plane and by golly I was paying close attention so why cant I log that time, im a CFI and rated in the airplane right?

Don't associated that with the crooked logging so easily. The safety pilot time is actually legit. That's why you're allowed to get just about a whole instrument rating using the method!!!

I agree the safety pilot time is legit for the purposes for getting instrument experience. I guess what im getting at more is simply throwing someone under the hood so someone else can sit in the right seat, look for traffic and have both log it as PIC time..
