ERAU CAPT is goig to log back seat observer time as Tot. TIme

[ QUOTE ]
A Embry Riddle CAPT student told me they are going to start and retro-actively log their back seat observer time and will be applying it to their total time column to beef up their total time hours. They were told this is unconventional but the industry would follow ERAU's lead.

What do you guys think of this?

I could not imagine going to an interview and having to explain logging 250 + hours of riding in the back seat.

Does this mean when I fly commercial, if I sit by the wing window and watch the phases of flight I can log that time.

I don't buy this. I'm no ERAU fan but nobody with any worthwhile rep. is that dumb

sounds like ERAU...now you'll be able to log as much time as you want, and how you present it is another thing.....just, you wont get your money back

I agree the safety pilot time is legit for the purposes for getting instrument experience. I guess what im getting at more is simply throwing someone under the hood so someone else can sit in the right seat, look for traffic and have both log it as PIC time..

I think thats a great idea. I mean, how else can you get PIC time for 30 an hour ???? With what we're charged for training!?

PIC for half the price is the best PIC around!

I think logging such time is useful if you're learning something. I've acted as a safety pilot several times, and have noticed new things about the aircraft while doing so (and about what my local airport's approaches look like visually). Just recently, our club installed a Mode S Xpndr into our Mooney. I got to really mess around with it while acting as a safety pilot (my first priority was looking for traffic, of course!).

The FAA has reaffirmed this to be their intention again and again and again...so why look a gift horse in the mouth?

My thoughts exactly! Hey, if my ticket is going on the line and Im not even flying the plane, you better believe that the time is legit.

I talked to someone who instructs at the CAPT program. This is all a rumor, but he did tell me I wasn't the first person to ask him about it.

Actually, CAPT held a meeting April 6 for all students and announced they would be implementing this logging policy. It is not rumor.
