Okay, other than the fact I should have said most US airlines, what part are we betting on??? Unless you know something I don't, that is my understanding...let me know where you think I'm wrong.

you got it backwards a proffesional flight engineer (PFE) will have 3 stripes, a FE with an A&P, a pilot who is going to move to the right seat (notice I didn't say upgrade) is a second officer (SO) and has 2 stripes.

My experience anyway, I'm sure there are exceptions as there are to any rule, as I'm sure TonyC or DE727UPS will be along to tell me how it is done at a real cargo airline.

Okay, that's backwards from what I was always told...glad to know if that is the way it is. As far as American Airlines, it is the way I described. Here's a link for ya for a pic of some of the good guys: http://home.fea.net/~aafe/avnotes.htm

Sorry, forgot about the A&P requirement also. And as far as the upgrade, I'll bet most pilots at least consider it a view upgrade :)

Edited to add: I guess it's a moot point since there are no airliners other than NWA supposedly that use 'em, according to earlier posters, right :) :banghead:

doesn't Pinnacle give their FA's two stripes?

Comair does (they are red). I am not sure about PCL but I believe they might not that you mention it. I will have to keep an eye out for that.

What do the individual stripes on the epaulets signify? I have noticed that FO's have three stripes and CAPT's have four stripes. I have also seem some two striped epaulets. What do these mean? Thanks to all who reply.

I bet the people you've seen with two stripes are FAs. I know SkyWest, Mesa, Shuttle America, and other carriers have male FA uniforms that look like pilot uniforms but have two stripes.

At Tigers the PFE and S/O both had two stripes, technically, but the S/O was allowed to wear 3 stripes as they were expected to upgrade soon anyway. At FedEx they both just wear 3.

To add a little confusion here, I had three stripes as both a second officer and a first officer.

My wings, however, didn't have a star while I served as a second officer, but once I upgraded to first officer, I got a little star above my widget thingy.

Am I the only one that gets a little annoyed when the stripes are worn in the middle of the epaulets? I was taught to wear the shoulder boards pulled to the outer most edge of your shoulder, that way they sit better.

Is there a standard, or am I being too picky?

Isn't NW the only one left with FEs? 747-200 right? Ummm Champion I guess, thats it right? Cargo ops still have them too if you count them as an airline.

Why are cargo guys always treated like 2nd class citizens? part 121 is part 121 no matter if you have boxes or bitchin' pax behind you...

=====================================================

For the guys that have an escape hatch in the roof. We all know the 3 stripes on the FO are just anti-skid so the Capt doesn't slip getting out of the burning plane.... :D

I asked my brother about it (retired Air Force) he said the rank is supposed to go to the outside, so I think as little space between the stripes and the edge of the shoulder as possible. Also the shoulder boards that are sorta trapezoid shaped, should have the wide end on the "outside".

Not referring to cargo carriers as an airline makes you feel like a 2nd class citizen?

Come on, everyone knows the cargo guys get all the late night flights because they are still learning to fly and are too dangerous to be flying in the same sky with the Airlines that fly the pax around during the day. Also you are obviously 2nd class if when you get to your gate you can't run up to the jetway and snag a good lunch at Sbarro or Panda Express, and make it back to the cockpit in under a minute...

You know as well as I do that most of the public thinks airlines are the ones that carry people around and UPS, FedEx, and DHL are just cargo companies that also have a fleet of airplanes.

They probably also don't know that cargo airlines have some of the highest paid pilots.

Okay, Chris Ford, Jr. Stop trying to piss us off now. Go buy your fancy uniform you feel entitled to (as posted above by you) so you can feel like a big boy.

Unfortunately, you are not talking to the general public who knows nothing of aviation. You are talking to people in the industry, and either through ignorance, or lack of respect for those that are at those airlines, are not improving your standing in a few people's eyes (well, mine anyways...I used to think a lot better of you until recently). I know, nobody ever cares what anybody thinks when called out on stuff, but please stop bashing the cargo guys and gals, both big and small. It just makes you look petty.

Let the flame wars begin...:insane:

So, according to both these posts, PFE wore 2 stripes (except Fed Ex), SO wore 2 or 3, and 2 of the 3 biggest Majors go by what I had originally posted. Oh yea, I think Seagull also said something about it being an "upgrade". Yes, I know it varies from airline to airline, but I think I was more correct...that's what I'm gonna stick to anyways.:)

I think you may have missed his sarcasm.

I caught the sarcasm in the middle paragraph, but the last two sound like he's trying to explain it away. Sorry if I misread it. On top of that, there has been some history here, that's why I said my image of him has been going down-hill (not that it means anything to anybody but me) :) .
