Epaulet Color?

OK I searched first. No luck.
This may have been answered, heck, I probably already asked it, even.

But coming from a guy that wears Dickies shorts and a bright orange Five Iron Frenzy shirt to go fly for rent money:

Why are there different colors of epaulets? gold/silver, etc.

Is it just up to the the whim and aesthetics of "the man"?

Do tell.

good question..did you try a google search on the histories of different airlines or aviation in general? i have no idea if you'd find something but if you do...it'd be interesting reading!

i betcha there's some sort of history to it. maybe just distinction between the companies, who knows.

no bars = student
1 bar = private
2 bars = inst priv
3 bars = comm pilot
4 bars = captain, check pilot

:D

There's no story or history (that I'm aware of) it's just up to the airline or operator what they have them wear to match the rest of the uniform. At Pinnacle I wore black epaulets with gold bars (black pants and coats). At Allegheny and Midway I wore blue epaulets with silver bars (blue pants and coats). I've never seen anything other than black/gold and blue/silver. I guess black/silver would be ok but blue/gold would just look stupid. I **think** that the ABX guys wear grey epaulets but they have grey uniforms.....it's just whatever matches the uniform.

Black and gold at Southernjets. Silver w/red piping at Skyway (or something like that, I can't remember).

LIAR! haha, jk. How could you have worked for pinnacle and noticed NWA's blue/gold uniform?? And i think PSA or US wears black silver.

We use blue uniforms and silver bars, the significance of that being...it's what they tell us to wear.:cwm27:

jetBlue has Blue/Blue. Looks kind of odd, but they've got a little theme thing going on.

ValuJet was Blue Shirts, Gold Bars and Khaki pants. Looked quite strange.
