empirical data on why Grand Forks sucks

our service at BJ's was bad. after sitting for 10 minutes w/o a server we were about to get up and leave. no one even said anything to us. after we ordered some drinks (5oz. samplers, 7 pack or something is what they called it) our service got a little better, but still not great. the steak they had was one of the best i have ever had at a resturant. montana steaks are the best though

That's not good about the service... if you ever head down to San Diego go to Karl Strauss Brewery and have the Red Trolley Ale... or just get their beer sampler. Very good food and GOOD beer.

Excessive use of space with your little light gray dot you put after every post. :argue: :D

Anyway... at least it's rain and not snow/ice! (Except...driving in snow is most of the fun!)

Umm, did you notice the article was about the ice storm? :) (It's in the title, and the first sentence, and the second paragraph, . . .)

;)

. <------ Not excessive.

Life is what you make of it. Grand Forks sucks because you guys allow it to suck. Sure there are things that I dont like up here, but I choose to go to school and live here. There are all sorts of things to do here, if you put your mind to it...just different things compared to what you're used to from home. Ever try snow mobiling? Hockey or other winter activities? In the summer you can go tubing or go to a lake. I've had a lot of fun on lakes in the summer months up here. I really think that when people say that there is nothing to do here or that GFK sucks, they dont have an imagination to come up with activities to do.

As far as businesses here, the town really revolves around the University. Aside from the Aviation program, UND has an excellent business school...mainly the accounting department. Cirrus also does their composite work here and the town is kind of a hub for local agriculture.

I actually would like to go snowmobiling, but I don't know anyone who owns one. I snowmobiled in CA as a kid a lot, but it's been a long time. Can anyone here get me out riding one??? Hockey is fun to play, but I haven't gotten into it...and I hate watching it. Much more fun to play it.

Lakes are non-existant around here. You have to drive 50 miles east to get any DECENT lake worth visiting.

What you've listed above is to the extent of what you can do here though... that's our problem we have with this place. You can only list around 10 activities that you can only do here, 5 of those beign evolved around drinking and getting extremely wasted (tubing, bars, etc). We have been SPOILED (if you look at it this way) with a huge array of activities to choose from, such as... cultural events, flea markets, good food, hiking, driving, viewing scenery, skiing-snowboarding-beach-lake-ocean all within 2 hrs driving (well, for Californians), clubs that actually have people dancing (we're talking 90% of the people), big city with an assortment of stores (I can't even buy a friggin filter for my SLR camera because there ARE NO CAMERA STORES HERE...and don't say Ritz Camera because it's an overpriced retail chain that barely even stocks UV or Polarizer filters for SLRs)...sushi restaurants (with edible sushi)...Mexican food...etc etc etc...

The bottom line is, if you haven't grown up with the amenities of a civilized location, you will enjoy Grand Forks.

Haha I would be one of those people that hasn't "grown up with the amenities of a civilized location." Not that I particularly like it, or will like it as time goes on, but it's really just something I am used to at this point.

snowmobiling? where and on what snow?

you know, theres a FEW winter sports i would really like to try.... snowboarding being one of them... but wait, theres no terrain here.

foiled again!

and as far as summer, YES, summer is PRETTY DAMN DECENT!! mild temps, some water areas to boat, ski, float...absolutely. hell, anyone here knows i love to bbq at least twice a week in the summer.

the problem is that summer is only about 2 months long. then it's back to suck.

Red Logde is about 10 hours away

Big sky is about 12 hours away

Lutsen, Giants Ridge are about 5-6 hours away (but not nearly as big)

Yes, back to suck indeed.

I'll admit, I don't mind living here in the summer. I'm plenty busy enough with school that all I really feel like doing most of the time is grilling outside just chilling outside with friends. If I didn't have school, I probably wouldn't like it as much. But it's still somewhat livable.

About the only thing I miss in the summer is hauling ass in a boat down the mississippi river(a REAL river, not thise creek they call a river here :) )and camping/hiking.

Haha yeah... camping with wilderness and trees around you, not a sugar beet farm next door and one human-planted dead tree a few yards away. They should just move this school to Colorado. That way the people who want the big city will be happy and the people who want outdoor winter sports can be happy.

A 50 mile drive here takes under an hour. A 50 mile drive in most of the "civilized" areas of California (and yes I'm from CA too) can take over 2 hours! Example...I live in Palo Alto. If I want to drive to Half Moon Bay (which I do quite often) it can take over an hour if its a weekend. The shortest time I've ever made the trip was in 35 minutes late at night. The nearest lakes are 50 miles away which really to me doesnt seem that bad.
