EMP--anybody else thinking about this stuff?

This isn't discussed too much, but I truly believe this is the weapon of choice for our young terrorists out there. So effective and so debilitating...I think used effectively, this method could destroy entire countries. The beauty of it, correctly used, the society targeted would destroy itself. Can you imagine the madness when the kiddies PS3 stops working?!

That's what was so great about the DC-8. It would fly with no hydraulics, no electrics (you could disconnect all 4 CSDs and turn off the battery) and manually (via cable, of course) drop all the crossfeeds and it would fly just fine till it ran out of gas.

Thank you for posting that. I like how we as a society advertise certain vulernabilities, then proceed with a reciepe for a catastrophic event.

I know there is EMP hardening on some military vehicles, and older carborated vehicles should be immune. Definetly something to think about.

To my mind, all passenger a.c. should have that equivalent as a fallback. Curious what the checklist would look like....

Emergency: lose all electronics:

  • Where am I: charts marked
  • What time is it: time noted ( darn--digital watch died)
  • Where am I going--mark chart.
  • How do I get there? --compass
  • What comes next?
  • What comes after that?
Another distinction is between "electronics" and "electricty" (thinking piston here--spark plugs, mags, aux fuel--don't know the turbine stuff yet)

hmmm.

Its only scary when you are not prepared...I think we need to prepare for this stuff.

I doubt you would get a turbine started. If you were in the air, and its fadec, you pooched. An old school one will keep making smoke though.

Moot point though. Where ya goin?

Can you translate "fadec" for us piston monkeys?

:)

However, Beasly knows "pooched", "old school" and "making smoke"

take the 68 b99 to pick up the 86 trooper and my very analog arms cache and...BECOME A WARLORD! FINALLY!

Sorry Boris, you'll still be walking. EMP will disable ignition systems, even point ignition systems. You need an inertially started diesel with a mechanical injection pump.

According to an electrical engineer buddy of mine (I posed this question to him 2 years ago) EMP's only affect items that are currently running/charged. So if you're flying, you're screwed, if you're on the ground your airplane will still work as long as you didn't have it running. So after the blast, if you go out and try to start your car, it should still start. Who knows if he's actually right or not...

As dependent on electronics as we are, EMP scares me--

So you are opposed to FADEC? Pretty soon, the next 20 years or so, when FADEC likely rules even the GA world this would mean a lot of emergency landings too!

No, not opposed---but where is the redundancy?

Concerned, yes. opposed no.

Cordially,
