Embry-Riddle vs. Auburn University

Hello all and welcome! First I would like to thank all of you for the great forum. My question is this, as a High Schooler wanting a job in the Professional Aviation industry, would I be better off attending Embry-Riddle or Auburn University? I would preferably like to hear from people who attended one of the Colleges, or people involved in the Aviation Industy itself. It seems to me that ERAU is a better and more respected Pilots school than Auburn. However Auburn gives you a Minor in Buisness after you graduate, which could help in the long run.

Thank you for your help

If you want to eventually work for Delta, I'd say Auburn, by far. You can't swing a dead Marsupial and not smack an Auburn grad in the lounge.

Well, Auburn wins the football game in the first quarter.

But yeah, beyond that, Auburn will, if you choose your courses wisely, educate you to be a free human being, too. ERAU grads have to do that on their own. All other things being equal, no sensible person would choose a vocational school over a real College. And that's not a slam on our ERAU grads...most of them have attended the School of Hard Knocks in one way or another. But if I were 18 and trying to decide between the two, it'd take me about 10 milliseconds to send my deposit to Auburn.

I went to ERAU and I would say Auburn and get a Engineering degree. Why? 1. It will be loads more fun, and extracurricularly educational. 2. You will have college football. 3 Did I mention it would be more fun?

Go where there are plenty of girls, parties, beer, girls, etc. My guess is that's not ERAU.....only a guess as I didn't go there but of course my grad degree is from there. Live the college life, fly military, get your training for free. My two cents :)

Riddle if you like standing around around a bonfire drinking beer with 40 other guys and two or three very VERY popular townies.

Five years, man. If not for MikeD, Mike Lewis, Bogbert and I can't remember who else on the forum I used to hang out with, I'd have been long gone! :)

I'd only go to ERAU if it was on a GI Bill or ROTC. I graduated Aeronautics Magna Cum Laude 2 years ago, and it has does absolutely nothing for me. I mean I do love my life, I wake up anytime I want, I don't have to shave, and I can hang out at the beach all day.... I'm currently unemployed!

Not to mention the nightmare of interest accumulating at 7% on a 100k loan...

Wow. I really have to thank you all for helping me out! You've really helped me make my decision a helluva lot easier! Next Question, does anyone know of any good scholarships I can apply for as a junior? sorta-related topic haha

NROTC ;)

I'm at Auburn right now finishing up my Junior year and was in the exact same shoes you were in. I went and toured ERAU down in Daytona Beach and though they did have a lot of fancy equipment, I did feel the sense that it was nothing but a bunch of dudes and no fun (no offense). Auburn is GREAT and if you're looking to have an awesome college experience (party, beer, girls, FOOTBALL) and get your flying in you'll love Auburn! We have a full motion simulator that you'll get the very basics of flying first and then you'll fly the C-172R for private, and then you'll transition into the C-172 SP (equipped with the G-1000) for instrument, then into our Piper Arrow for Commercial, and then we have two Piper Seminoles for multi-engine training. We also have a Flight Team that travels across the south east and competes in flight competitions. You have to spend some of your free time washing the planes but you do get free flight time out of it!

As for the business side of the course, I'm enrolled in the Professional Flight Major which is the business and flying combined. You'll do your typical 5 day classes with flight-labs, which is your flight lessons, scheduled in between classes. So say you have a 9AM English class, 11AM flight Lab and 2PM Math class. You'll go to that class at 9 then go out to the airport for your flight (usually last about 1.5-2 hours), and then head back to campus for class at 2. The only downside is that their is no bus system that runs out to the airport so if you don't have a car it can be a pain in the ass. With Auburn's flight department, the ground school classes are counted as a regular college credit, so you can take your Private ground school course as a class on campus. At the end of the semester you'll take your FAA written for your "final exam", so it works out pretty conveniently.

If you're trying to decide where to go based on college life, it's a no-brainer! Auburn is awesome! Though you don't get to see jets take off from Daytona Beach International, they don't get to cheer alongside 86,000 other drunk football fans on Saturday! The people here are super friendly, the night life is great, the campus is beautiful, and if you're looking to get into the AFROTC we have the one of the best detachments in the country!

Hope this helps, if you have any other questions just hit me up man.

I work with a new grad from Prescot, ERAU. He has $120,000 in school debt and doesn't even have ANY CFI certifications. He took the multi engine career path and can't build time as a CFI. All he has is a CMEL with 190 hours.

At the risk of sounding like an old man, why should one pick a college to go to based on anything other than academics. You are in college to learn, are you not? This is what I see wrong with college, is it's turned into a party. Grow up and take on some responsibility.

Honestly, if you want to do the ERAU route. Do a year or two of community college, knock out all the basic GenEd's and maybe some flying. Then transfer down there and finish up.

Eh, you have a point, but you have to have fun, experience new things, and make friends while you're in college too.

But if that's all you are there for, take the money you would otherwise spend on college and buy some friends and hookers. It's the same thing, no?

Here's my take on it. If you were talking about going to Harvard law vs Billy Bob's discount law school, you'd have a point. But in all reality, Riddle's aviation program is probably pretty close to the same as Auburns (which I'm sure is immensely cheaper).

So all things being equal, go where you're going to have more fun and have a more "normal" college experience.

That being said, if you really want to hang out with a bunch of dudes looking at airliners.net photos. Then have at it.

Fair enough, I'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm sorry, but if you haven't grown up and started acting like an adult by the time you get to college, perhaps college isn't the place for everyone these days.
