I am looking for guys that have flown both. I have about 800 hours in the EMB and had fun, but I think I might end up in the CRJ after this next bid. For guys that have time in both which one did you like more and why?
It depends on what factors are important to you. Are you looking at it from a QOL point of view at Eagle or an operator's point of view?
I flew both of them at Eagle. Paywise - although the hourly pay is the same - the EMB would most likely pay more and have a better QOL, especially as a commuter. The majority of Eagle's flying is on the EMB. You have more ability in terms of variety of trips and in being able to drop/swap trips. The CRJ - even though Eagle is getting more of them, will have nowhere near the amount of flying that the EMB has to work with.
From an operator's point of view, I prefer the CRJ over the EMB. The EMB has never felt like a solid aircraft. The avionics seem jury-rigged, especially with the Universal. Although I do like the PTT button for the radio mic on the outboard side of the glareshield and I liked that the EMB cockpit "feels" roomier - the CRJ cockpit is cramped.
If you do decide to go the CRJ, you get to do a portion (I think a week) of your ground training at home in the comfort of your pajamas/slippers or whatever you lounge around in. You can do it in GSW, but you won't get per diem or a hotel room for that portion of long term you could have done at home.
The biggest gotcha at least for me going from the CRJ to the EMB - was that the HDG and SPD knobs are swapped from the EMB to the CRJ (or vice versa) on the mode control panel. I'd be flying along in HDG mode and ATC issues me a speed restriction. I'd adjust the throttle and then spin the "SPD" (but in reality HDG) knob to bug the new speed - and off in a new direction I'd go... After that happened a few times, I had to force myself to really "look" at which knob I was grabbing before spinning it.
About the only other thing I liked about the CRJ is the fact that you climb out at .79 and fly around everywhere at .82-.83.
But in terms of QOL, the CRJ sucks for QOL.
Since you're currently on the ATR - put both of them on your bid (especially before the bids close tonight) at the very least you get a pay raise going to any jet. and since you're already familiar with the EMB, I'd put that one first, CRJ second. If you get the EMB great, if you get the CRJ that's great too.
