EMB 145 vs CRJ 700

I think with the expansion of the CRJ fleet, first class (possible food on board?), two FAs, and an overall better aircraft that I would take the CRJ. The biggest minus is you are going to be restricted to only ORD or DFW as bases and overall there will still be less lines to choose from.

I was disgusted at myself at how comfortable I was on a GJ 700. 3 classes of service, and the lighting seemed more easy on the eyes.

At MAG we have snack packs on the 700s

To me, the cockpit noise factor would be enough to drive my decision. Those Brazilian lawn darts are noisy as hell, even in the cabin. The CRJ is a much quieter airplane. You couldn't pay me enough to have to fly 80 hours a month in a cockpit that required David Clarks to keep from losing your hearing.

Turboprop men everywhere are laughing at you

In turboprops, everyone is a man. The boys-men, the girls-men, the men-of course, men.

FlyChicaga can attest that I created that phrase many moons ago. :)

And it is true, drop it into beta and the bras start flying.

The 700/900 from the AWA fleets are the absolute WORST riding planes I have ever been tortured to sit in. Vertical pitch and no seat padding.

I don't know. I've only been on one and it was a Comair bird.

NJA is referring to the Mesa birds. Their seats suck. Comair's are a bit better. Nicer than some of the old 737s at United (all gone now) and Airways.

The one with auto throttle is better. ;)

Both have FADEC... No autothrottles until you get to the ERJ Heavy 170s.

My man asks a question, and it turns into another Regional wang-measuring contest.

Unless the pay or QoL is different I'd say it's a wash.

Which one do you wanna fly?

Chicken or Fish?

Ying or Yang?

Stars or Stripes?

Six or half-a-dozen....

I know you're exaggerating but this is the attitude that opened the door a crack to scope which management then used a crybar (bankruptcy) to pry open even further, isn't it?

I'm not saying that I would agree to outsource it, just that I wouldn't bid it. If I was the junior man and that was the junior plane, then I'd suck it up, but I wouldn't bid it. Hell, this is one of the reasons that I have no desire to bid the 737. That thing is noisy as hell, and the 717 is about the quietest cockpit around. How am I supposed to enjoy reading my copy of the NY Times if all that racket is going on around me? :)

Ah, see what you mean!

The thing is it is not going to be a wash. Depending how the bid comes out I could have +30 people under me or be in the bottom 5 in both planes. I wish I could see how the ATR and NYC EMB guys are going to bid.

I am looking for guys that have flown both. I have about 800 hours in the EMB and had fun, but I think I might end up in the CRJ after this next bid. For guys that have time in both which one did you like more and why?

It depends on what factors are important to you. Are you looking at it from a QOL point of view at Eagle or an operator's point of view?

I flew both of them at Eagle. Paywise - although the hourly pay is the same - the EMB would most likely pay more and have a better QOL, especially as a commuter. The majority of Eagle's flying is on the EMB. You have more ability in terms of variety of trips and in being able to drop/swap trips. The CRJ - even though Eagle is getting more of them, will have nowhere near the amount of flying that the EMB has to work with.

From an operator's point of view, I prefer the CRJ over the EMB. The EMB has never felt like a solid aircraft. The avionics seem jury-rigged, especially with the Universal. Although I do like the PTT button for the radio mic on the outboard side of the glareshield and I liked that the EMB cockpit "feels" roomier - the CRJ cockpit is cramped.

If you do decide to go the CRJ, you get to do a portion (I think a week) of your ground training at home in the comfort of your pajamas/slippers or whatever you lounge around in. You can do it in GSW, but you won't get per diem or a hotel room for that portion of long term you could have done at home.

The biggest gotcha at least for me going from the CRJ to the EMB - was that the HDG and SPD knobs are swapped from the EMB to the CRJ (or vice versa) on the mode control panel. I'd be flying along in HDG mode and ATC issues me a speed restriction. I'd adjust the throttle and then spin the "SPD" (but in reality HDG) knob to bug the new speed - and off in a new direction I'd go... After that happened a few times, I had to force myself to really "look" at which knob I was grabbing before spinning it.

About the only other thing I liked about the CRJ is the fact that you climb out at .79 and fly around everywhere at .82-.83.

But in terms of QOL, the CRJ sucks for QOL.

Since you're currently on the ATR - put both of them on your bid (especially before the bids close tonight) at the very least you get a pay raise going to any jet. and since you're already familiar with the EMB, I'd put that one first, CRJ second. If you get the EMB great, if you get the CRJ that's great too.

Well, I know first hand you are a good craps player, so all you can do is play the odds.

Best of luck, bud...
