Easiest way to get out of LA Airspace.

You can do option 2 at 4500. 5500 better.

Yeah that. I've flown a 152 through there a few times. Unless it's blowing in the mid to high 20's it's a non-event.

You could also head for New Hall pass (just north of VNY and WHP) and get out to the desert Via NewHall Pass -D-> Soledad Pass -D-> PMD and on your route. If I could do what Frank did, You'd see how easy it is. Highest you'd have to climb would be 5500 and youd still clear terrian by 1000ft.

Soledad Pass...that's up by Lake Hughes VOR, right? Probably the easiest up over Valencia and then cut across just before Lake Pyramid, then direct Palmdale. I've taken a 152 from SNA to PSP with a reasonable amount of fuel and two good sized fellas in the cockpit with no problems. The other option is plan a fuel stop somewhere in between. Daggett isn't much to look at but they have cheap gas and a place to pee. Or stop in VCVand see the 787 test flying. If you're not in a rush (trust me, after two hours in the 152 you are going to need to stretch your legs and take a leak.) As for turbulence, we haven't had too much in the way of that over the high desert before about 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. if the winds behave themselves and the temps stay lower than about 80 F. Southbound from IYK to VNY definitely take the route from the north Soledad. Going by Big Bear/Hesperia, there a lot of descending traffic enroute/departing ONT and March ARB. If you go through the Grapevine, mostly just a couple of VFR guys and LA Center picks you up pretty quick from a lower altitude from a couple of the radar sites out at the coast for OXR region. If you go the Palm Springs way, check density altitude before you start getting close to Banning Pass and pay attention to the winds aloft, I got rocked in a Bonanza departing out of there last spring around May. Have a good trip and take lots of pictures. Once you arrive in MSO, grab a Moose Drool and sandwich at the Pickle Barrel for me.

Hmmm......

152, long range tanks, two guys, and stuff for a multi-day cross country....

The only way I see that fitting legally is both of you being midgets. And that's a lot of really high terrain you're looking at.

How often are all those restricted areas hot? It seems like it should be that big of a deal to snake yourselves west from IYK.

I'm 145 soaking wet, he's maybe 170...and just cause we have long range tanks doesn't mean we're going to fill 'em up right? Thanks for the advice so far folks. I like the banning pass and then overtop of PSP. I figure once we get out of the valley we can just cruise along I-10 all the way to PHX. Maybe a break in BLH?

Your going too far north. No need. Just head up the 14fwy. Auga Dulce will be off your left, and from there at around 55/60 you should be able to see into the desert/Palmdale. Plus it gives you a place to divert to is the WX turns sour. It's been doing that recently around here(winds).

Alright...I'm heading south from Bakersfield though, so it's a little shorter for me :D But I am definitely familiar with the area you are talking about because it seems like every trainee I've had since I started here has used the Quail Lake/Agua Dulce area as a checkpoint for their VFR Nav missions. I'll agree with you on the winds lately. We got kicked around pretty good here in the south valley and I finally got to test a near demonstrated x-wind landing in the Baron.
