Duration of knowledge exam endorsement?

Can anyone point me to a definitive answer on how long an endorsement to take a knowledge exam is valid for?

Yeah, I looked in there--nothing about endorsement validity duration for knowledge tests. Anybody else got an idea?

Maybe you could call a testing center and ask? In order to train the test proctors, they must know that sort of info.

I found the numbers for LaserGrade and CATS headquarters on the web. Try giving them a call:

LaserGrade: 1 (800) 211-2753
CATS: 1-800-947-4228

Nope. AFAIK, there isn't a source on this one, definitive or otherwise.

There is no regulation that says an endorsement for a knowledge test expires. So we have to use a little bit of logic here. A knowledge test expires after 24 months. If you take a knowledge test and it expires before you do the practical, you will need to be re-endorsed to take the knowledge exam again. If you get an endorsement to take a knowledge test and you wait 25 months to take the test, the proctor will make you get a new endorsement. So it stands to reason that the endorsement expires after 24 months.

Where's the reg that says THAT? Since there's no reg that says the endorsement expires, the original endorsement should still be valid, right? Just playing devil's advocate here.

It's not a matter of a reg as much as it is a proctor who refuses to give you the test with an endorsement that is older than 24 months. The proctor will ask for the endorsement and if he/she sees it is older than 24 months, he/she will tell you that you need a new endorsement. I have my FAR/AIM with me right now and I can't find a regulation that says the endorsment expires. I do see a regulation 61.39 that says you must have an endorsement to take certain tests and the test is good for 24 calender months. This is why I said we need to apply logic.

This is an area where the FAA should make itself clear, but clearly they don't.

Proctors don't care if the endorsement is older than 24 months. They just care that there is an endorsement.

Our school is a Lasergrade testing center, and there's nothing in the books about a date on the endorsement. The FAA doesn't have an experation date, hence: There is no experation.

Just like a high performance endorsement doesn't expire, same deal.

I asked this same question when I finished ASA's DVD private ground course. They said the endorsement never expires. Now they aren't the FAA or anything but that's what they told me.

They make it perfectly clear - they don't give an expiration for the written test endorsement.

How much clearer could it be?

While a student pilot, I ran into this situation with a test Proctor who would not allow me to take the Commercial Written with an endorsement that was more than 24 months old. While I agree, and pointed out the FAA does not have a reg for this, the Proctor made me get a new endorsement. I can only speak from my experiences, some Proctors won't let you take the writtens. BTW, ATP makes you become a test Proctor for CATS and we never discussed this in the Proctor Class. The only thing we discussed was the expiration of knowledge exams after 24 calender months, and the exception that Airline Transport Pilot written exam can be used for a practical test provided the applicant is working under part 121 as a crewmember.

Knowledge exam

The amount of time you can take the knowlege exam and finish that rating up is 60 days ... hope this was the info you were looking for.

I heard that 60 days rule before. However, I was unable to find it on FAR/AIM. If someone can point out, I would really appreciate.

should be under far pt 61 or the section that governs flight schools. I just got the new far/aim so i am still browsing thru it

Won't find it.

I'd ask the testing center. Not because they know the rule (there isn't one) but because they just may incorrectly decide that there is an expiration.

You're going in for a knowledge test. You can:

1. Get a current endorsement from an instructor and have no problem.
2. Perhaps get into an argument with the proctor.

I know which I would suggest for my students.
