DOUG....Get At me

Tipping can go a long way.

[/ QUOTE ]

I guess I tip different than most here. Not to pat myself on the back or anything but I was kind of surprised at how little some people tip.

At a restaurant I always leave at least 20% if it is a personal meal, if it’s a business expense at least 30% three meals a day (all time record tip of $300 tip). I don't tip at grocery stores (wal-mart) or starbucks. SkyCaps get $10 for 1 bag and a boarding pass. I usually give cab/van drivers $5-10 depending on the trip.

Well that’s all I can remember but, I encourage you to tip if you can, people work very hard in the service industry and it can be a thank-less job, I see people at restaurants and airports everyday being so rude to people who are doing the best they can...

Oh yeah, the hair cutt people give 'em at least a $5 tip...

[/end rambling]

$10 for the skycap?? Wow. I only just found out last year that they are supposed to be tipped-never occured to me before that. I thought $1 a bag was reasonable seeing as they only take about 5 minutes max. And it's not like the go out of their way to be better with service, it's not like food where it can get to you cold or the wrong item or not taste good. Maybe I just don't full understand their job.

but your bag could end up in timbuktu if they decide to not give good service

[/ QUOTE ]Jetcareers.com is the home of pilots. In my experience, pretty much the same thing.

Not that there's anything wrong with that ...

unfortunately, we have to be to survive in this environment

go figure.

Yeah, but an extra buck or two ain't gonna kill you. And for the poor dumb bastard (that used to me, folks) making $2.38 an hour plus tips, it's sure appreciated.

Now that's just wrong! If some one ever intentionally misdirected a bag because they didn't get a tip-they should be fired! I think you should always do your best at your job no matter what and then at the end of the day be proud of yourself for doing great!

Agreed. But you never know, since he didn't get a tip he's got to hurry up and get to the next person, then he could accidently put the wrong sticker/tag on your bag...next thing you know your in CVG your bag is in CGV!!

P.S this thread could have been in the Lineman/Ramp thread haha

Dude...CHILL

I hope you know that the guy's who you directed that statement to could very well be interviewing you for a corporate job not to far down the road.

If there is one thing I have learned over the years of observing boards like this it's that aviation is an extremely small world...be carefull who's toes you step on.

correction....I'll prolly be interviewing him for a job

Im not saying tip people for doing their job..Im saying tip if you guys need fuel ASAP and your 3rd in line for it or you want hot coffee instead of warm coffee we dont have to do 80% of what you guys ask for anyway..cause the truth is.....we are the ones that provide speedy service to get you and your passengers out on time..for you to collect in tips...and dont say that corperate guys dont get tips either..ive seen it....

ATA victim ( by the way you need to loose the victim attitude )

Your emotional response betrays your youth, as does your attitude. As far as tipping you still have not convinced me, actually I do tip when I request above and beyond service and I can tell you it is more than a dollar. You are the one who said corporate boys were not eduacated in tipping ... so educate me with a mature and sound argument.

Yes the FBO are taking advantage of both of us. While you are correct in saying it doesn't come out of my pocket directly, in the big picture it does effect my income. The more my company pays in taxes and other things to include tips the less there is available for compensation.

If you want to make it in aviation or any other considerable career in life you need to grow a little thicker skin on your back, so what if I told you to shut up ... I was speaking of your woe is me attitude. You are correct that this site is for people to share opionions and experiences, and with my vast life's experience I am telling you to shut up with the attitude.

Your attack on my daddy having to pay for everything again shows your limited maturity, grow up. For the record my dad has paid for nothing ... nothing. I have made my own way in this world, and it has made me a better person.

I guarantee you this ... 5 mins with me in the cockpit and you would never look back on your ramp job or any other job for that matter.

And this I can assure you ... you will never be interivewing me, but it was a good comeback.

Jim

I also tip pretty highly. For me, 20% is standard at a restraunt unless they give kicka$$ service then in which case I have tipped upwards of 50% before. I have also stiffed a bill because the service was so pisspoor, but if it's really bad i'll only leave like 10% (or less)

with skycaps i usually tip $1/bag and then sit there and watch them put the tags on. I didn't know that more was expected with skycaps.

[/ QUOTE ]I do what skibum does.. depending on service... and it's pretty well known that skycaps "usually" expect $1 per bag... I can't afford $10 per bag much less giving $5-$10 to the van driver when i have to wait 20 minutes for it to even show up.. that would just get to be too expensive after a while (you know, it all adds up if you look at the bottom line)...

So I do a dollar per bag for skycap (if i use them) and van driver and they're usually very appreciative.
