DOUG....Get At me

[ QUOTE ]
When I unload 8 golf bags, 8 HUGE hard-sided suitcases that weight 30+ lbs, and other small bags and load them into 2 full size cars and I begin to worry about having a hernia. They don't tip.

Don't I wish. I would have retired from SWA by now.

And about the haircuts and tipping. Yeah, they only see a portion of that $12, but CFIs only see a portion of the $30-40 the school charges, but we're not expected to tip them. I only see a fraction of the ticket prices for a flight, but I don't get tips. About the only people I tip are servers (their wage is adjusted for it), bartenders (so I can get a stronger one next time) and pizza delivery guys when it's raining. I used to tip at Starbuck's, but that was back when my wife worked there, and I got the drinks for free.

When I was working at signature I never "expected a tip". Doing so is extremely arrogant, IMO. The only times I was ever a little dissappointed about not getting them were after I did lav service on flexjets and netjets. They spoiled us all because they tipped so regularly for that.

Unfortunately we had these "line hostesses" who lived and breathed for tips. Anytime they didn't get a tip they would badmouth everyone, nevermind that it was against company policy for us to even accept tips in the first place!

I thought most of the people I worked with on the line at signature were first rate people. We all had to take an obnoxious amount of flack about signature's "handling charges" on a daily basis. That little fee probably sours many pilots' opinion of signature even if the service they get is first rate (which it may or may not be, depending on where you are).

Well, maybe when you realize that the owner of the store is taking most of that $12-and that the person who cut it is getting usually minimun wage, then you might change your mind??

[/ QUOTE ]

Girlfriend gets to keep all of her money...no owner of the store there! Self employment, baby!!! And she gets wayyyy more than $12 for a haircut (I think she let me sit in her chair once for $12, but then I had to go....

).

Oh, but the taxes....

Yeah, I have a friend who does it at home too. She only charges me $10 but she usually charges $40. I don't know what her taxes are but I'm sure it's still better then only getting paid $5 an hour plus tips.

Is it legal do do hair at home in Utah?? Wow...that's where we need to move!!!

No, can't do that here. She does booth rental, and works for herself. Grosses much better than $50,000 per year....and it's going up!!!!

We've got a deal, though...she gets to retire in 10 years.

And don't even get me started with foreigners. Bust your butt for them, give them good service, and get nothing as a tip because they don't do it in their home countries. Hey, guys, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, and tip!

[/ QUOTE ]yeah.. but the thing is that foreigners have tips included in the cost for everything... and over there, you get exceptional service no matter if a tip is included or not.. so it's really not their fault for not tipping, i just don't think they know any better and they're not used to how things work over here...

What peeves me the most about tips at the airport I work at is when the pax go to tip you and thank you but the pilot tells them he will take care of it or vice versa. To me that is being rude and a cheap bastard. Then to top that off the pilot will write it off in the expense account and pocket the change.

Like I said...all I really want is a thank you and a good attitude. Tips are nice though...

A tip isn't a business expense?

I give a basic 10-15% for good service at a restaurant. If I'm ignored, I don't feel bad about not leaving a tip.

I pretty much stopped tipping van drivers, at least for as long as I'm at near poverty level incomes. I will tip $1 if they take me someplace other than to the airport/hotel.

I really cut back on my tipping after I realized how much money it was costing me.

[/ QUOTE ] There are a LOT of in home salons here. You have to have a permit and license, which is $40 a year. Some people have the fancy chairs and sinks put in their house, other's don't. You also should have some business liablity coverage so incase your client trips on your sidewalk you'll be covered. Allstate adds biz cov for a pretty cheap price, to your home owners policy. I thought this was pretty standard-I didn't know it was illegal in some states.

A tip isn't a business expense?

Many of the companies are given X amount of dollars for tips and other various expenses that might come up on a trip. They just have to record what went where if I am not mistaken. They will tell the company they tipped $10 at FBO in XYZ when in reality they didn't and pocket it.

If I am not mistaken NetJets is given money for this on trips. Is that right NJA Capt?

In a recent debate on flightinfo there is also someone else who makes reference to pilots pocketing tips like this in there.

What is it with people and tips lately? You even see tip jars at fast food counters! Thats BS.

We tip line guys as long as they give us above average service and have a good attitude. I tip them a bit extra if they spin the props in the rain/sleet/snow/wind so that I don't have to.

So there's a hint to you line guys...spin the props on something with Garrett engines and you might get a bit extra.

Oh, and like the line guys claim all of their tips...riiiggghhhtttt!!

I am sure other FBO's do this, but a friend of mine works at one and all the line boys get paid a percentage of the gas sales after a certain number of gallons are pumped. I am not sure what the number is, but I do know each full time line guy gets an extra 100-150 a month, and they are allowed to accept tips, but I know he doesn't expect it. He gets around $12 an hour and bonus from gas. And this being a non-skilled profession, it is pretty decent pay.

[ QUOTE ]
I was under the impression that tipping was voluntary, as opposed to mandatory.....with the exception of, for example, restaraunts that pre-inform you that they add gratuity for large parties, etc.

[/ QUOTE ]

yeah thats starting to really get to me too--- these "pre-added" tips on the bill and then while calculating your 15% you find that oh, gee, it has already been added. "How convenient."

No... what really bugs me: I've gotten many angry stares after tipping my 15% based on total AFTER tax. No, you don't tip the tax too- you tip the mainframe fare.

It is, but when you consider that the folks who are doing the work are getting like three bucks an hour tops...

What they ought to do is what they do pretty much everywhere else. Pay the folks a living wage, and then nobody has to worry about tips.

I don't feel compelled to tip at the Starbucks, the grocery store, or any place where it's not typical. Okay, so it's getting typical at the Starbucks, but that's besides the point.

Anyway, if there is a place where tips are customary, I do it. Take care of me and I take care of you. And if you don't and there's no good reason for you to not have taken care of me, then I won't, especially since I have been there.

At signature I started out at 8.25/hr as a "line service technician". We got a 75 cent raise every 3 months, but we topped out at $10/hr. No "fuel sales bonuses". We just got bugged every hour of every day by management about safety. The Line manager, safety coordinator, and General Manager get 5 figure yearly bonuses if there are no towing/ramp accidents. The line guys got zero extra for having an accident free year, and if we did give a plane hangar rash more than once, we were on the street.

I'm not complaining, overall I enjoyed the job and the pay was enough for a single guy like me to live off of comfortably.

About tipping...

I worked my last year of HS for TGI Fridays as a waiter. As you work at a place longer you see familiar faces and you remember if they took care of you last time in terms of the tip. When I saw someone like this that took care of me you better believe that I busted my hump to provide excellent service and I would have no problem buying them dessert or a free beer.

If someone came in routinely that wasn't a big tipper (the type of person that would give you 2.00 on a 25.00 bill) you better believe that I was not going to give them as good of service and focus my attention to my other tables. To see some of my coworkers that did it full time to support themselves and families, to see them get bad tips made me feel real sorry for them as I know that to some of them it was their ownly means of financial support (we were paid 2.14 an hour).

I have been a part time bartender at a major hotel for the past 14 months working both the Restaurant Bar and working Banquets and doing parties in that department. At the bar we know the regular 'big whales' and even though we don't comp them drinks we make sure to give that extra special attention. When the enter we know what they want and have it ready for them as they sit down and occasionally charge them for Absolut Vodka when they get Grey Goose or something like that.

When I am working a wedding which is open bar and if I have a 'big whale' that keeps coming up to the bar over and over again tipping me if they have a special request I will try to make sure they get it. For example the party I worked last Saturday the vodka we were using was Absolut. Some guy who gave me a 20 at the begining of the night who kept coming up over and over asked if we had Belvadere. I said hold on a second. Spoke to my bar manager, he knew what was up and promptly ran to get the more expensive vodka. The guy gave me another 20. I gave my bar manager a 10 spot for getting it and I pocketed 30 from this dude. When I am working a wedding we are NOT tipped in the contract, I will always try to provide excellent service, but we are MUCH more inclined to go that extra mile and bend a few rules if we are being compensated.

Tipping is not neccesary for as many things as some people think it is however if excellent service is provided a little compensation can go A LONG way.

If a pilot is a regular at an FBO I am sure the line guys will remember if they were slipped a buck or so IF (thats a BIG IF) they go the extra distance.

Geez ... Who knew jetcareers.com was home of the cheapasses?

[/ QUOTE ]Jetcareers.com is the home of pilots. In my experience, pretty much the same thing.

Not that there's anything wrong with that ...
