DOT Sec Buttigieg: Domestic Testing Being Seriously Considered

Idk, personally I’d feel more comfortable getting on a plane knowing everyone else also tested negative within the last couple days.

Plis maybe this would catch more asymptomaric carriers who will then quarantine rather than unwittingly spreading it around the country.

Stupid!
This virus is weird. A person can be exposed to the virus, test neg three days later and then show symptoms a few days after that! A test is merely a snapshot of that particular moment in time....l.nothing more.

The 3-days prior thing just proved it’s a warm-fuzzy measure. The Abbott rapid is ok for getting a positive, but it’s still a crap shoot with false-negatives. A rapid PCR that can be done at the airport is the only way to make this a viable measure. How would that work?remote site testing/holding area then a bus to the terminal? Until there’s a Covid tricorder...

I think your second paragraph is the point. As was mentioned, flying hasn’t been shown to be all that risky. But it could make it harder for Florida to Florida the rest of the country.

I disagree. Just because this wouldn’t be a perfect measure, doesn’t mean it’s not worth looking at. Unless I’m mistaken, what makes this virus so unique is you can be asymptomatic and spreading it to others. That’s who they’re trying to discover.

Theoretically, someone within that three day window where they aren’t showing symptoms could get where they’re going, get sick and alert someone. Theoretically, that would allow for contact tracing...but that assumes a system that works and Americans not being selfish d-bags.

Great way to deal the kiss of death to an already struggling industry. Even though in 2020 only about 60 cases worldwide were traced to transmission on board aircraft (6 things doctors wish patients knew about flying during the pandemic). If they're trying to stop infections from spreading across the country, well it's a bit too late for that. In a time when cases are dropping and vaccines are starting to roll out, we should be looking into how to get more people vaccinated quickly and come up with a plan to return to normal. Instead we get even more restrictions.

But hey at least they look presidential while completely destroying our industry. Talking down to us with their condescending smiles as they ruin our livelihoods. Because hey, they're keeping us safe right? One executive order at a time.

I'm sorry, this is normally not my type of dialogue. I'm just sick and tired of the insane measures that are being taken or proposed, the shaky assumptions behind them, and the toll they're taking on our careers, with no end in sight. Seeing my friends struggle in aviation and many other sectors is painful. Just everyday honest people working hard, trying to get ahead in life and the rug keeps getting pulled from under them. I really hope this doesn't come to fruition

This is kind of what my little operation has already been doing. Everyone gets tested prior to a trip...crew and clients.

I think the additional safety measure would promote more travel honestly. For those who can afford to do so anyways.

Last time I checked US cases are dropping. Be it seasonality, vaccine rollout, all of the above...

Maybe it is the vaccine rollout, behavioral changes, or ??? Or by Trump U math, if we test less - we’ll have lower numbers.

Without identifying the cause, we can’t be sure if status quo is the reason.

I mean, how do ya'll think the UK and SA variants got here? It wasn't by people walking.

Negative test results are required at all the island destinations that are popular for 91/135 this time of year. They wouldn’t require these tests unless absolutely necessary as their economies rely on tourism.

How is this relevant to the topic at hand when international requires the test now?

You can still drive and travel statewide so I fail to see what your point is. If we have a mutation form in the US that's similar to those two, it's highly unlikely it's squashed because of air travel having domestic testing. It will probably still spread throughout our country.

Incredibly not, even if I’m not such a fan of this proposed rule.

Got anything on the merits?

He has some ok over all visions for transportation... He has too much focus on zero / Ultra low emissions projects that which come at an economic expense at a time we can’t afford it. Ideas that make you feel all warm inside and look good on paper aren’t always practical. Furthermore a domestic testing requirement would cripple the airline industry even more. That rule would lead directly to furloughs.

Anyone who’s taken a covid test and would rather drive because of that is a moron. 20 seconds of swabbing your nostrils in exchange for saving days of driving? Y’all nuts.
You seem to forget it's not about going on your trip it's about the possibility of restrictions on coming home, going back to work, having to stay at XYZ for 5-10 more days. That's the issue. Not a 20 second nasal swab.....
