Don't be this guy...

One thing that the pilot mentality needs is a good dose of "self awareness".

We don't ask ourselves "am I being an ass?" enough.

And that's good. It's an available service. And like you say, it comes with limitations and terms, which you understand. Using the service is purely technique.....neither right nor wrong to do so.

For me, I see far more value for using it while enroute with ARTCC, as they're not usually slammed busy, and if you have anything go wrong, you're already talking with ATC. Whereas try requesting it at peak time with PHX, when you're only planning on going underneath their airspace shelf, or around it, but never inside it, and its a fair chance you'll get an annoyed "unable at this time. Remain clear of Class B airspace, frequency change approved." Conversely, In and around other TRACONs, it may be the opposite at various times. It all just depends.

Like stated, it's an available service, but one that is lowest priority for ATC. Your mileage may vary.

If you are familiar with the area, it helps to know the sectors frequencies to listen to, like say going under a bravo or doing practice approaches not being worked by approach.

Most definitely. Even if not using the service, being on the freq of the B/C sector you're either next to or under, is great SA.

Yes and no.
It's all depends at on where you are. Skirting the bravo shelf in SAN, it's better to be in the common traffic freq rather than listening to the jets on the various arrivals.

Lord knows how many midair's I've almost had towing a giant ass banner there.

I'd love to meet this guy. He probably taught Mossy or whatever that kids name was, actin a fool last year.

Where the shelf is important is underneath low final. As well laterally you may have persons going through. My concern isn't with jets on SIDs/STARs necessarily, unless i know I may be in the way of a known one. Airport towers too are important I agree.

BL is, a little bit of homework for where youll be going near, goes a long way.

Vegas sucks.

UGH. Fascists.

"Snapshot 123, I see you are filed out over CLARR"
"That's correct, Snapshot 123."
"Snapshot 123. That's an inbound-only fix."
"...well, do you have any suggestions as for how we can get out of here IFR (1) at an altitude that is attainable for this operation that is also (2) above MEA?"

Snapshot 123 traffic 2 o clock 5 miles 2000 feet above.

In sight, will maintain visual.

Snapshot 123, negative turn right immediately, and I can't have you in my airspace anymore.

It's a miracle we got anything done there, at all.

P.S., Las Vegas TRACON, if you are reading this: you are not really all that special when compared to NCT/SCT or any other "real" terminal area. And almost every other terminal area seemed to be happy to work with us as equal participants, so... :bang:

Yup. Or another story, relayed to me by a guy repositioning a charter King Air from North Vegas to McCarran:

"N123, North Vegas Clearance."
"Here."
"N123, McCarran advises that they're not accepting any general aviation arrivals right now."
"Well, that's (I do have sufficient education to emote without using profanity, but I'm reporting what was said on the radio)!"

This Afghan on Persian bulllying ends HERE! :)

But why Derg? You're so quiet, I'm wondering if you don't get enough pay? I called you on this once. If you're too busy to answer my question then you tell me, you're too busy. Don't tell me to standby and then not answer me, that's just not professional. Ok? Yeah, good luck on your resume is what he needs. Now that you got a 1,000 hrs TPIC you need to apply to Southwest and be a PHX based pilot for once.
