Wow this thread is a long one. I didn't take the time to read all the replies just yet. I am free and clear of paying the fine and incurring the points to my record. Just got the letter today.
Tony C, I am sure you are without guilt in any regard in your life aren't you? Was I speeding? Probably. Was everyone else? Yes.
Do you live in CA? If so, or if you ever come here, do not talk on your cell phone without a hands free device while driving. It's against the law. Does everyone do it? Yes. Does that make it ok? No.
You do understand that the ticket system in CA brings in a substantial amount of income for the state. The state also fails to inform people about how they can fight a citation. It is much easier to take it in the arse and pay the fine.
I have integrity. I stated in my arguement to the citation that my speed was just with road conditions and flow of traffic. Long story short, I get my bail money back, no points on my record, and no traffic school to attend.

You should have read more before you tried the "holier than thou" argument. I already explained that I have made plenty of mistakes myself.

Two things you will never hear me bragging about:

1) Being perfect - I'm far from it.

2) Breaking the law and getting away with it, or breaking the law, and trying to get away with it.



I'm passionate about this because there are lives in the balance. I'm not discouraged by your attitude, because I've been "there" myself. When I was your age, my dad was pretty "stupid," too. Fortunately, I lived long enough to see realize just how wise he was, and just how foolish I had been. Hopefully, you'll live long enough to make that same journey.

Look, my speed wasn't endangering anyone more than any other vehicles on the freeway at the time. Anytime you get into a vehicle or get up out of bed in the morning there are "lives in the balance". Should we wrap ourselves in a bubble and stay inside our entire lives? I know thats a bit extreme.
So by your argument I should have just paid the fine and not contested what I feel to be an inconsistent system.

We all have our pet peeves and things we take to heart. Do lawbreakers who pose a genuine threat to people deserve what they get. Yes. I hate drunk drivers. My brother is paralyzed because of a drunk driver. He had a lot going for him and it is all gone. He had a plane, a good career with a significant income, etc. Now he oversees people who do what he used to.
What I was cited for was small in the big scheme of things and lives were not put at risk anymore than a normal day here on the fwy's of CA.

Then there is the "Saudi Nanosecond"...that is the time between the red light changing to green and the first horn blowing!

My experience in driving over there was to put one foot on the gas, one hand on the horn and never, never, never look left or right...that was a sign of weakness! I loved it...a mixture of drafting at Talladega, figure 8 racing, and tractor pulling all rolled into one!

well, see that's where the 2 sided coin comes in....in one case, you might have to run the red because you don't have time to stop and because there's a guy on your tail that would slam into you otherwise - so that's what you have to do because if the guy slams into you, your at fault period!!

so, in essense, on one side of the coin.. you run the red hoping not to hit someone and end up getting a ticket/fine...on the other side of the coin, you slam on your brakes causing the guy in back of you (whose probably driving too close anyways) to slam into you thereby *causing* an accident and your still at fault...

no real good way around it except to keep watch on those traffic lights as soon as you see them as about 1/2 to 1/4 mile from it, start taking your foot off the gas in anticipation that you will have to stop regardless.

Yep, in Cali if you hit somebody from behind you're at fault no matter what the car you hit did.

The "real good way around it" is found in the Second Point of the Smith System of Defensive Driving: "Get the Big Picture." Not only should you be looking ahead to where your vehicle will travel, but you should be aware of vehicles and hazards on either side of you and behind you. If there is another car following you at an unsafe distance, be proactive at removing the hazard. Slow down, easing on the brakes and displaying the brake lights. That doesn't mean slam on your brakes so that he has to lock his brakes, but rather to slowly and cautiously slow down. Chances are, he'll go around you. If he doesn't, your reduced speed will improve the chances that he'll be able to stop when you stop. If there's a lane that you can change in to, do it. If there is only one lane, and he refuses to back off, turn off the road and allow him to pass. Whatever it takes, don't allow another car to endanger your safety by following you too closely. Waiting until you're approaching an intersection with a yellow light at 60 miles an hour to think to check your rear-view mirror is too late. Always know what's going on around you.

Brake CHECKING IS NOT THE WAY TO GO! Especially in Socal! All the gangsters here have guns, so having someone pull up next to you pissed off cuz you scared them, is not very fun!
