Just a quick update. I'm going to head over to CCBC ether Friday or 2 weeks from Friday. I'm going to meet with some people involved in the ATC program and if all goes well, I'll start the transfer process soon after. So pumped. I also just realized that if I do this, I'll have to get my Private Pilots License which if freken awesome.

Good luck and have fun. Make sure you have a plan to pay for the pilot's license. Flight ratings aren't cheap.

My advice is to knock out the PPL as soon as you can. I had mine when I went there so it wasn't a factor for me, but knew many people who procrastinated. The winters there aren't conducive to flight training. I knew plenty of people pre first solo with two weeks left to go until graduation.

Question about the PPL. Do you guys suggest I get my PPl this summer here in VA or should I wait till I get there? I've read that I should do it here before I go bc they jack up the prices up around CCBC sine they know we need it to graduate.

I've heard from two or three CCBC students that flight training there is more expensive than if you just pursue it on your own.

I second genot's suggestion to do it during favorable weather. Student pilot minimums are pretty low, and may end up having to cancel a lot of lessons if it's too windy, icy, cloudy, or any of the other things that can keep you from getting the training in. Plus, it's just nice to train in good, moderate-to-warm weather.

One last reason to consider getting your PPL in early... hour requirements can vary per person in terms of how long it'll take you to take your checkride -- 35's the bare minimum if you're 141 (which I'd assume is what CCBC requires), but very few people are actually ready by that point. If you started early, then you could better allow for that extra time. Just in case.

Anyway, if you decide to do it early, don't forget to shop around a little bit. Don't go with the cheapest option, but the most expensive isn't necessarily the best either. You don't need to go up in a glass cockpit to get some good training -- although you can if you want to, of course -- but at the same time, stay away from screwy old guys flying around a Tomahawk held together by duct tape. See if you can identify people who are CFI's because they're genuinely interested in teaching or if they're just building hours on your dime. www.airnav.com has some reviews of flight schools on individual airport pages; there's probably a better resource out there but it's a start. And, of course, there's always the people at JetCareers.

Hey guys I've been reading this thread since it started and just wanna say WOW, lots of great people here and a ton of good info! I'm a CTI student right now and this thread actually popped some new questions into my mind.

As I got to the part about the medical requirements, I was wondering what happens if a fully hired controller gets crappy vision or develops a heart problem or something like that?

Do they get let go, or can they waive that stuff once your in?

Once again, thanks!

Titan, let me know if you have questions about the curriculum or anything, very willing to help.

Forced medical retirement I believe.

edit: Well, only for something that isn't correctable. Eyesight can be corrected, so I don't think that would qualify.

If a medical condition develops that would prevent a controller from receiving their airman's certificate (the medical), then they can't continue to control planes. Pretty cut and dry.

Both JC and SM have forums where you can ask flight surgeon med questions, so if you've got something that troubles you (say, a family history of diabetes or heart problems), shoot them a question and they'll be glad to help out.

I had my meeting with the folks at CCBC yesterday and it went pretty well. The aviation building was pretty cool. Jim Scott was a great guy, who gave me a tour of the facilities and answered all my questions. All in all it was a great experience.

Its funny how far I've come in the last 97 posts in this thread. I can't thank you enough for all the information you guys gave me in this thread. With out you guys, this doesn't happen. I hope one day to meet you guys in person and shake your hands.

Hopefully people well continue to use this thread as a reference because there is a wealth of terrific information here all thanks to you guys.

Shake hands? We want you to buy us drinks!

Glad it went well, be sure to keep checking in as you go through it. And, uh, don't screw up on the AT-SAT.
