Distinguished Road?

I want to see some kind of scoring system. Either quarterly or monthly or maybe weekly that will show how is in the top ten for "Winners of the week" and who is in the bottom 10 for being "losers/waste of life" of the week.

That would be awesome. Then we could shun or even have a virtual burning at the stake of these people. We could light them on fire. I'm excited.

On a related note, we need more voters.

My vote is to get rid of the reputation system.

i don't think reputation is supposed to be used like a "user be good stick" but more of a "you really want to listen to this guy because he knows his schtuff" on the extreme positive and "you want to avoid this guys advice like the plague" on the extreme negative.

the type of reputation that talks about strength and value of the subject or lack thereof....that type of "reputation".

This is flawed and assumes that people will give out reputation points based on "knowledge." If this is what you're going for, then it won't work.

I give everyone a negative, just because Im equal opportunity.

I wondered what that little widget thing under my user name was.
If this is a social experiment- is it appropriate to wonder aloud what we think the goal of the experiment is? (Doug, mods, anyone?)

(You really wanna know who doesn't know a damned thing about pilot-y stuff? Frank Abignail, Jr. He just told that FBI agent that they were flying over runway "FOUR FOUR" at LaGuardia. Oh REEEEEAALLY?)

This all reminds me of a proverb on my Zen wall calendar. I wish I could cite the source, but I don't have it in front of me. "Words are like water- east to pour but impossible to recover."

I participate on a couple other forums that use the rep system heavily, and it actually works out rather well. In fact, I haven't seen a place where it hasn't worked out well, but that could be that I've just not been on enough forums that tried it to less success.

The key is for the core users to USE IT. The more habitual it becomes for users to "positive rep" posts that they think are good, and "negative rep" those they don't, the more effective the process becomes. If only a very few users participate, then it won't have enough input to actually be of any use. It's sort of a Wikipedia or eBay user feedback system that, in and of itself isn't 100% accurate, but over the course of the many inputs (and course corrections to the outliers, both high and low) trends on being close to truth data.

So, I recommend that the frequent participants in the JC community use it frequently while it's here, and perhaps it'll spread. So long as we use it responsibly, and not just to beat down the next user who posts something that we don't politically agree with, it can be useful.

It would be interesting to know if it could be turned off in the Lav.

The Lav is where it would create the most accuracy. I make it a point to try and kick Jtrain in the nuts every chance I get - but I can't think I'd give him a "negative" rating. He engages hard, states his case and I admire that. I wouldn't give a negative just because they're a communist (like Greaper, sometimes Acadia, Jhugz) but I would give someone a negative for being a dumb ass - even if I agree with their views (and this occurs). I would hope my liberal counterparts would be the same. DarrenF is the one I'm worried about...and KLB and Dough and others - because they are political bi-sexuals and will be harder on both the left and the right.

Don't knock straddling the fence unless you have tried it. In other words, sit a mile on my ass and then comment. :p

I concur with Waco, and disagree with Steve. As one of aforementioned liberal academic elitists, I don't fear Waco (or any of the red-meat eating, God-fearin' conservative 'merica lovers) negative-repping me for my views. Downvotes are for stupidity and less than optimal behavior, not disagreement. Leave it on and let the karma flow.

Is there a setting where the board will give a pop-up notification of someone giving you a rep (works just like the notification when you get a new PM)?

This happens on another forum I visit...otherwise it's not obvious when you've been getting rep'd, positive or negative!

Big +1
I tend to be harder on people I agree with that do not show themselves well anyway (not so much on here, but in general)

Sooo...where would one go to see what kind of reputations one has received and what posts earned them?
