Apparently posing with a turbine blade is now alarming to passengers!


CHICAGO (WLS) --
A Chicago flight attendant for Spirit Airlines is in trouble for some photos taken on the tarmac at O'Hare Airport.

Some passengers who had just boarded a Spirit Airline plane at O'Hare looked out the window and saw a flight attendant posing inside the jet engine well. One of the passengers contacted the I-Team in disbelief, asking if it was part of a new pre-flight checklist. When this flight attendant ended up working their flight, they took down her name and later found she had posted the pictures on her Facebook page.

Some passengers witnessed the flight attendant standing on the tarmac in front of one of the plane's jet engines and then scrunched in front of the turbine blades.

One person who contacted the I-Team said they couldn't believe what they were seeing and questioned whether it was proper and legal.

Depends who took the photo. Most if not all airline employees have escort privileges. A crew badge can be used in lieu of a visitors badge. If the person who took the pic had an escort SIDA and was clearly in the vicinity, then no violation. Even if they weren't, crew members are allowed on the ramp around their aircraft and to/from their aircraft. Hell, at SFO some of the lounges are actually down on the ramp to begin with.

Doubt anything was actually violated here unless Spirit REALLY wants to push the issue to make the public think this was a big deal and they did something about it.

As long as I (and my coworkers) stay within the shadow of the aircraft, it's not a "deal."

Now, if you walk across the ramp, Airfield Safety is going to jump your stuff, but they'll leave you alone within the footprint of the aircraft.

Meh, plenty of regional crews would routinely walk across the alley from the gate 71 area to the lounge or to the other gates on the "thumb". I never saw them hassled unless they didn't have their badge on period. So many escort privilege employees everywhere they're always in the vicinity of someone and are out in plain view. With the construction of "the front", I guess it doesn't happen much anymore but it used to be very common when you guys parked on the "old" 69-71.

I think the issue is that a flight attendant working the flight was not on board the aircraft when there were passengers on aircraft. I'm guessing the FAA frowns on not having the required component of flight attendants.

I'm pretty sure our FOM allowed a pilot to substitute for one flight attendant during boarding, so not necessarily a problem.
