Delta\'s future plans

Airline Pilot Central-Delta
APC is saying that Delta will reduce fleet size from twelve aircraft types to four by 2008. Does this mean that Delta is looking at doing some major shrinkage to the airline, or will they simplify the fleet while beefing up their "four types" that they'll keep?

Re: Delta\'s future plans

Little birdie tells me that the long term 'big plan' is a combination of 737-7/8/900's, 7E7's and 777's. But can't confirm nor deny.

Re: Delta\'s future plans

I'll sure miss the B737-200s!

Re: Delta\'s future plans

I'm wondering which of our regional carriers will try to buy Emb-170/190's first, if any of them.

I could really see Skywest flying the 190's.

What does everyone think?

Not with present-day scope, but that'll get tossed when DL heads into BK court.

Re: Delta\'s future plans

Shuttle America will be putting E170 in service for Delta in the Fall.

Didn't chautaqua buy EMB-170s?

Yes, they do have the 170's in service.

And is Shuttle America really going to fly the E170? That's a huge jump from Saabs to the 170...wow.

Re: Delta\'s future plans

Shuttle was bought by Republic. They arent really the airline they were before, but a certificate to be used to get around scope. These planes will be flown by those on the CHQ seniority list.

From a guy whose been chomping at the bits for DL to file for BK but strangely want to work for a connection carrier...

Is Republic still around? I don't keep up with the airlines much.

I remember living in Atlanta in the early '80s and they flew a lot of those Metroliners I believe made by Merlin. I had just started flying in '79 and I loved those planes. I have no idea why. I just thought they looked cool for some reason.

Different Airline.

Republic Airways Holdings Owns..CHQ, ShuttleAmerica, and Republic Airlines.

"Chomping at the bits"? Come on man, I've never said I want to see such a thing happen, but I recognize its inevitability. That is, unless your DALPA brethren are willing to give up half your present salary, all scope, and your pension plan at the bargaining table, and I just don't see that happening. Management simply has no incentive NOT to file for bankruptcy, particularly when THEIR pension plan is in a bankruptcy-proof trust.

The ONLY thing that will stop it is if Congress blocks off this "bankruptcy-as-management-strategy" the way UAL and US Airways are using it, and thankfully, those discussions are taking place.

Can you believe they continued to buy those until the early-mid 90s?

Re: Delta\'s future plans

That is rediculous if those other regionals get the 170, Comair was promised those after their pay freeze. That means the worst regional airlines that aren't even owned by Delta are flying the newest, biggest and best jets.....

Re: Delta\'s future plans

I'm real glad to see the 170's/190's coming online. I think there is a future for the legacy carriers, but that future is probably long-haul and trans-oceanic only. Once enough aircraft in the 170/190 category are online w/ regional carriers, hopefully there will be more point to point service at a lower cost, and more long haul and trans oceanic service also at a lower cost.

I think these airlines should focus on one area and find a way to be profitable there.

Those Jets were awarded to Republic before Comair took the bait and agreed to a pay freeze. What makes Republic Airways' Airlines the worst regional?
