Delta & SLC!

...I just want Express Jet to open up an SLC base! Rumor has it we've got lines that are dead heading guys from LAX to SLC to start trips.

The brain trust was short a few neurons during LM's time.

What are you saying? LM was the answer, finally rescuing Delta from the inbred promoted-from-within incompetents that had run the airline into the ground and pissed off the employees. We were so excited we had finally found a real manager from the outside who realized we didn't need to cut costs after all!

In the grand scheme of things, I wouldn't ever say "never", but it doesn't make any sense.

Now now Doug. You should know that because it doesnt make sense that means they will start int'l service soon. Common sense does not apply in this industry. I hope you had a memory lapse because you should know that by now.

Now Dave we know LM and the gang was Delta's savior. That prophecy they brought in from the outside made him look like the reincarnation of Mr. Woolman.
LM knew banking but he didnt have a clue about this industry. The ups and downs and cycles that it goes through. I really appreciated him taking my 401K and allowing it to steady decline and then having the brains to set up his own little fund. His great leadership caused my ESOP to go from an ok deal to worth 80 cent overnight. I loved it especially hearing about on the news before we (the employees) were told. I miss LM and the gang about like a I miss riding a bag tug on a cold, rainy, windy and nasty IROP day. Only an employee who lived the LM dream could fully understand the misery.

Oh I know. What is always forgotten is that ALPA leadership was rolling out the red carpet and striking up the band to get this visionary leader who had never spent a day in our industry. Anything to turn out the dummy who was saying Delta had to cut costs to survive past the turn of the century.

But was cutting cost/concessions really the answer? Could the same end result be acheived with raising fares?

Southwest is apparently the current scorn of the media. They're calling for it's head on a platter, or a merger or acquisition. Or worse, cutting cost and putting it on the backs of the employees.

They recently raised fares, and I have heard (according to an FI thread) that management is not going to make the employees share the pain.

So it will be interesting to see if they can get back where they were sans concessions, but raising fares to stem the tide!

Max
Cuts were going to happen but LM and the gang didnt have a clue of where to start or how to start. They looked at the bottom line not the operation of the whole company. The customer is the one that pays the bills and when you cut from them you cut from the profit....Customer service is the key to survival.....Had LM and the gang not banked that money would it have made a difference?..maybe but we will never know.

Delta needs to expand their SLC flying, then give all that flying to ExpressJet so I can then be based out of SLC.

Wanna hear the irony? SLC/LAX are probably gonna be new PCL bases. ATL/MCO aren't even mentioned in the rumor mill anymore.....

Delta's gotten the hint that passengers want first class on all their flights. So look for DL tell all the DCI carriers to re-configure all their 70 seaters with first class seating. Bombardier is having a hard time keeping up with maintaining the 50 seat a/c with spare parts making it hard for regional maintenance departments. Both Embraer and Bombardier have both stopped manufacturing 50 seat a/c, with the exception of Embraers agreement with China to build more 145's in China. United has already started the new wave of express flights with first class seating. That's why Mesa's going to loose their contract with UA. The contract was for 70 seaters and Mesa's been slow at aquiring new 70 seat a/c.

Even NWA has tossed the idea of a first class section on the 50 seaters around. Honestly, I don't see how it would be workable. They had 44 seaters (what it would be with a first class section anyway), but they converted them to 50 seaters b/c they were always oversold. Plus, I think there's an issue with the seat rails and where the seats for the first class section would be mounted.

I know that Mesaba's -900s are gonna have a first class section, as are the -900s we're getting for Delta. Word from the school house rumor mill (and on good authority since I personally know this person) is those planes are done and pretty much ready for delivery. The only question is "delivered to where?" We were SUPPOSED to get an announcement either this week or next week on where the new base is gonna be, but nothing yet.

I think TP's will make a comeback for the smaller routes and the 50 seat RJ's will slowly disappear to be replaced by 70 seaters and next gen TP's. We'll see.

They can make it up in volume! Just add more flights! :sarcasm:

Then why did Delta just give us 18 planes worth of 50 seat flying out of LAX?

Take a stroll thru CVG and looked at the parked jets. Perhaps they're gone now, but for a period of time, every occupiable span of ramp space had a 'quasi-generic' CRJ-50 sitting on it.

I think you see a spike in 50 seaters during the summer b/c of added flights to take advantage of demand. Then they scale back down a bit in the off season. Thing is, even with the added flying in the summer, they're still oversold. The ones in the off season (at least in the NWA system) are almost always oversold as well. Basically, you could put a 70 seater on a lot of 50 seat routes and make more money than just with the 50 seaters. The trick is not expanding too much too quickly. I think a lot of airlines are afraid of expanding too quickly and being left with empty seats. Now they're starting to realizre the demand is there and 50 seat jets aren't going to cut it. TPs are easier to operate, and now they come in larger varieties. Even PCL's management realized that if we just stuck with 50 seat flying, we were gonna be left the odd man out in the regional cake walk. I'm not even sure if EMB or Bombardier even MAKE 50 seaters anymore.

If Delta awards any more 50 seat flying, it's probably gonna be ex-Mesa routes.

John, the reason Delta awarded you guys flying is b/c you're a very, VERY real competitor in the LAX basin. They'd rather start up new routes and sub them out to you than see all the money just go to Expressjet. At least, that's my opinion. This way they get some of the $$$ instead of XJT getting it all.
