Delta Pilots Vote to Authorize Strike by ~95%

It's amazing. We get all over the French as wussies and they protest when people try to take away some of their more ridiculous worker's rights.

Yet on the other hand, we see people here telling people, man, you've got to work with the managers when the managers at Delta have done some serious shafting of their employees.

And then we wonder why we have two weeks vacation here in the US when they've got six weeks over in the states, and why we get shafted time and again by employers.

Seems pretty clear to me with some of the attitudes expressed here. They do it because they can.

No, what I hate is people who act as if everything is wonderful. Well, it's not. We work harder in the United States than people do anywhere, and yet, the shrinking middle class is getting squeezed by rising gas prices, stagnant wages, and higher copays and deductibles as well as rising interest rates.

And instead of saying, hey, maybe we'll tell the corporate powers to be to stick it where the sun don't shine, we get people who say, oh, well, you gotta do it for the good of the company.

And we call the French surrender monkey wussies but when someone threatens their overblown job protections, they shut the mofo down.

It ain't hunky dory. Acting like it is, now that's something I hate.

My heart goes out to the Pilots of Delta. I hope you guys can win this fight. I think you are definately on the right side of this one.

Someone mentioned people being upset over someone asking them about their ticket they bought on Delta.

I'll be real honest here. I have a trip coming up and I haven't bought my ticket yet. I want to fly on Delta. I like them more than anyone. The trip they have is much more convenient for me and would love to add the miles to my skymiles account but I am not spending the money on it when I don't know reasonably well that they are still going to be here when I go. Until I know, i will be waiting and watching other companies fares. If they start to go up, I will be sitting on a another companies airplane.

Maybe manamgement should figure that out; that their bullying is driving customers away.

You would be too if you changed your method of thinking. Adivce given to a certain pilot group that hasn't had a raise in over 4 years, "think outside the box".

with regards to how it will turn out with the French- The gov't is already giving in to almost all of the law and is probably going to repeal it. Read some of the articles on it, but don't go to any US media outlets because they flat out lie. So to answer your question- no it didn't bite them in the ass. It made a difference.

Its funny to see not just your method of thinking but most others in that they are soooooooo easy to just roll over and say oh this will just hurt us later on.

On a side note- can you imagine what the people of this country would think if they saw the french citizens winning this battle? (maybe we can learn something from them?)Going to the streets and demonstrating, and disrupting the economy. If the US media covered this(which they won't), the top 10% of wealth in this country would be shaking at the knees. Wondering if the worker bees are going to figure out the secret. That they, in fact, have the keys to their wealth. By withholding the labor and acting as a Unified group.

I don't know how things will turn out. Are their protections way out there? Sure, and I've called them that.

However, the strikers and demonstrators have won, the government has backed down.

Now, as for whether it creates or destroys jobs, I don't believe it has any effect. Seriously, if I were a 22 year old French student and I knew I was going to be hired and dumped when I got old enough to warrant full job protections, I'd be pissed, too.

Jobs are created when companies need employees to get things done. If they need those people, they need them, and they'll hire them, regardless of what legal protections employees have.

Actually there was a reason for this law. French companies are failing to compete globally. This law was an attempt to fix that so although they may be winning the battle in the case of this law, they will lose the war when their company goes out of business. That was the point I was trying to make. I wasn't doubting the ability of the youth to affect change.

They MAY go out of business. A company does not NEED to compete in a global market to make money. It's just that there are some very greedy people out there that are not satisfied until they run the world and feel some strange need to compete on a global market.

Remember, there are tons of mom and pop businesses out there that do fine in small town America.

I think the solution is that people need to stop being so enamored with flying and realize it's a job. But for a lot of people, it's their only "skill" and the thought of not being able to do it irks them to the point where they'll accept subpar pay. This is especially apparent on the regional level... by the time one gets to the majors, it seems like they've realized it is work...

So what's the explanation for why people will work for such low wages (especially at the regional level). This happens in other industries too, my mom loved her job too much, and ended up not getting the money she deserved, and gave me the advice that you always must remain as passionately neutral about your job as possible, because if you love it too much, you're willing to give up too much, but if you hate it too much, you're miserable.

So tell me exactly where the flaw in that logic is.

What could possible be wrong with what he said there? Isn't that exactly true? Haven't we all said that is why companies like Gulfstream exist?

Sometimes you all are pretty tough on Chris. I find his thinking very clear. There are times he is sarcastic, and maybe not always diplomatic, but so far he has been pretty consistent in his beliefs.

pilot602: Delta management doing their "fair share" is meaningless in the big picture. Executives make their real money in three ways: stock/options, bonuses, and golden parachutes. Note the absence of salaries in that list. Google's top 3 make only $1 a year in annual salary, yet they're each billionaires on paper.
